Ted Astley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ted Astley (1922-1998) was a British composer often known by his full name Edwin Astley.
Astley's actual recorded output is quite sparse,a few singles and a couple of albums of the music from "The Saint" and "Danger Man" which were only available in the States until 1997 when he arranged for CDs to be issued in the UK.
Possibly the most bizarre thing about Ted Astley's death is a total lack of tributes by the music media, limited to obituaries in the "Times" and the "Independent".Even the Musicians Union never noticed as he'd not renewed his payments.

Sir John Dugdale Astley, a member of parliament, and known as the "Sporting Baron," was so excited by the long-distance walking world that he inaugurated "a series of six-day races for the 'Long Distance Champion of the World'" Yet, the format would be changed somewhat from just specifically a walking race to a "go-as-you-please" race.
Astley would decide any legitimate challenger to challenge the holder of the Astley Belt within three months of the race.
Astley opened all of the races, and sent the men on their way.

 TrouserPress.com :: Virginia Astley
Her father, Ted Astley, is an accomplished composer best known for television themes; her brother is artist/producer Jon Astley; her brother-in-law is Pete Townshend.
In 1985, Astley signed to Elektra in the United Kingdom and released a pair of singles, neither of which broke any new musical ground for her.
The angry lyrics by this single mother (the baby's father left Astley during her pregnancy) are made even more effective by the charm of her voice and the delicacy of the music.

Astley subsequently played in various dance orchestras (usually billed as Ted Astley) during the second half of the 1940s before putting his own group together.
Astley retired from working full-time in music during the 1970s, but kept his hand in at his own studio and also wrote orchestral arrangements of songs written by his son-in-law, Who founder, guitarist, and singer Pete Townshend, who had married his daughter Karen.
Meanwhile, his son, Jon Astley, became noted as a singer and later as a producer, and his other daughter, Virginia Astley, made a name for herself as a singer.

Guardian Unlimited Books | Review | Review: Staying Alive: Real Poems for Unreal Times, edited by Neil Astley
Astley has divided his anthology into 12 sections with titles such as "Body and Soul", "Bittersweet", or "Me, the Earth, the Universe".
Astley's critical comments rarely rise above the clichéd boosterisms of jacket copy: as founder-editor of Bloodaxe Poetry, he has had to come up with punchy précis for some 700 volumes over the last 30 years, so it's perhaps not surprising that his own prose is infected with blurbitis.
As one might expect, Astley favours poets published by his own imprint, for whom he doesn't have to pay rights, and the book includes generous selections from David Constantine, Gjertrud Schnackenberg, Brendan Kennelly, Stephen Dunn, Fleur Adcock and Ken Smith.

Staying Alive: real poems for unreal times by Neil Astley (editor) | PopMatters Book Review
Indeed Astley can't resist a dig or two at the perceived appropriation of contemporary poetry by the academy, approvingly quoting a description of Elizabeth Bishop's teaching methods at Harvard in order to emphasise his own position on the reading of poems:
Poetry, for Astley, is a continuous activity and each poem a continuous contribution to an ongoing poetic engagement with human experience, while he also allows each individual poem the space to generate its own significance for the reader.
Astley harnesses dozens of definitions of poetry, many from contributors to Staying Alive, in order, perhaps, to demonstrate that poetry exists on its own terms and consists in part in producing and defining itself.

Add to that the fact that Pete himself produced Simon's debut album using some of his own musical collaborators (like drummer Mark Brzezicki and his arranger/ father-in-law, Ted Astley) and a close approximation of his Empty Glass-era sound, and the weight of comparison becomes almost unbearable.
