Cassidy died of complications following open heart surgery in 1979, leaving behind a long-time girlfriend and two children, Sean and Cameron, both of whom are now attorneys.
During the run of the original series, Cassidy – in full Ruk make-up – once participated in a gag in which he pretended to be Gene Roddenberry in order to fool a suit salesman who had come to the studio.

Theodore Crawford "Ted" Cassidy (born July 31, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - January 16, 1979 in Los Angeles, California) was an American actor who played Lurch (in which role he was able to demonstrate his genuine skill on the harpsichord) and Thing on The Addams Family.
Cassidy did more work with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in the early 1970s, playing Isiah in the pilots "Genesis II" and "Planet Earth." Ted Cassidy was 6 ft 9 in tall (206 cm).
Ted actually appeared in a special two part episode of the Hulk where he played a similar monster to the green skinned behemoth, after a scientist is transformed during a laboratory experiment that goes wrong.
