Clarinetist Ted Lewis was born in Circleville, Ohio in 1890 and was playing leading bands in Ohio as early as 1910.
Ted formed a musical vaudeville act with his older brother Edward Friedman that was billed as "Ted and Ed" which toured the Gus Sun Vaudeville curcuit.
Lewis' wild stage antics and crazy clarinet sound stole the show and by 1919 he had left Fuller's band and started his own group which was featured in the "Passing Show of 1919" and the "Greenwich Village Follies" of 1919 through 1922.

By 1919 Lewis was leading his own band, and had a recording contract with Columbia Records, which marketed him as their answer to the Original Dixieland Jass Band who recorded for Victor records.
Ted Lewis's band was second only to the Paul Whiteman in popularity during the 1920s, and arguably played more real jazz with less pretension than Whiteman, especially in his recordings of the late 1920s.
Lewis kept his band together through the 1950s, and continued to make appearances on television and in Las Vegas into the 1960s.

It's difficult to believe, based on a paltry pair of compact discs of Ted Lewis' music that exist, that from the beginning of the '20s until the mid-'30s, he was one of the most popular music acts in the world, cutting million-selling records when those scarcely happened more than once a year.
Ted Lewis was never considered a great, or even a good jazz player -- though he was a better player than he got credit for being -- and wasn't taken seriously as a singer (even by Ted Lewis [+]), nor was most of the music that he recorded considered good jazz.
Lewis recognized the ability of men like Spanier, Brunies and Murray, and paid his featured soloists well and did his best to keep them happy -- in that regard, he was a good band leader with what turned out to be a great band.
