James Edwin "Ted" Meredith (November 14, 1891 - November 2, 1957) was an American athlete, winner of two gold medals at the 1912 Summer Olympics.
Meredith retired from competition in 1917 and served in the army during World War I.
Ted Meredith died in Camden, New Jersey, aged 65.

Meredith's winning time of 1:51.9, a new world record, eclipsed the standard set by Sheppard in the 1908 Olympic Games.
Meredith captured two consecutive AAU titles in the 440 in 1914 and 1915; his latter victory, on a straight course, resulted in an astounding, but unofficial, world record of 47 seconds.

Meredith's standard, 47 2/6 seconds, was tied last year by Eastman at Los Angeles and by Vic Williams of Southern California at Philadelphia.
In each instance it was Eastman, whose long, thin legs devoured the yards and smashed the stop watches to relieve Meredith of his records and Penn of its crowning glory.

James "Ted" Meredith made the 1912 Olympic team while still in high school and won the gold medal in the 800 meters, narrowly outkicking the defending champion, Mel Sheppard, in a world record time of 1:51.9.
In that race, Meredith continued on to set a world record of 1:52.5 in the slightly longer 800 yards.
At the 1912 Games, Meredith won another gold medal on the 4x400m relay team and was fourth in the 400m run.

I have praised Meredith's book in two articles for the ABS magazine BAMBOO so I might as well do so here.
But Ted is available to respond to such questions, although he may not thank me for saying so here-- try contacting him first through his publisher.
One thing I really like about him is that he is not, in contrast to some bamboo growers who think they know one's own environment better than one knows it oneself, dogmatic.
