  Robin Ray - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robin Ray (1935 - November 28, 1998) was an actor, musician and broadcaster, the son of comedian Ted Ray.
Ray's claim to fame was his ability to recognise pieces of piano music and name not only the piece and the composer but also the opus number.
In the early 1990s, he was one of the founders of the commercial classical music radio station, Classic FM, with which he remained associated until his untimely death.

Ray's a Laugh did not actually include Nedlo's name among the credits, nor indeed that of Charlie Olden (his real name).
Nedlo/Olden was, by 1949, calling himself Ted Ray - and that was how he billed himself for his new radio series.

Ray was born Charles Olden on 21st November 1905, the son of a Wigan comedian.
Ray's route into the theatre was punctuated by work as a ship's steward, an office clerk and a dance band violinist before he made his debut at the Palace Theatre, Preston, Lancashire in 1927.
The height of Ted Ray's fame was undoubtedly through his work in radio comedy, where his own series, Ray's A Laugh (pictured, right), which commenced transmission in 1949, rapidly became a firm household favourite, running eventually for twelve years.

This Comedy Playhouse pilot was the first attempt at a 'legit' TV sitcom for the veteran comedian Ted Ray, although he had appeared in a recurring domestic sketch in the 1958 series of The Ted Ray Show, and his famous BBC radio show Ray's A Laugh was essentially a sitcom.
The programmes had a courtroom setting, and Ray and Charlie Chester (who co-devised the show with his long-time collaborator Charles Hart) appeared as counsels for or against propositions put before the jury (12 members of the public), with Jimmy Edwards acting as the judge.
The programme was co-written by Ray with John Junkin, produced by Peter Frazer-Jones, and the supporting cast included Junkin, Reg Varney, Ray Alan, Mike Felix and singer Rosemary Squires.
