In 1931, modern dance pioneer Ted Shawn bought the farm as a retreat.
Inside the theater on either side of the stage are life-size portraits of Shawn in his Hopi Indian Eagle Dance and Ruth St. Denis as Kwannon—the Japanese Goddess of Mercy, painted during the Denishawn era by Albert Herter.
Pillow Founder Ted Shawn was instrumental in beginning in the careers of Martha Graham and Jack Cole, and the Pillow has continued this mentoring role by providing opportunities to young artists such as Alvin Ailey, José Limón, and Mark Morris.

The building was named for Ted Shawn, the modern dance pioneer who founded the nation's longest running summer dance festival on a farm he bought in 1930.

While studying to become a minister, Shawn suffered a bout of diphtheria at the age of 19 and he was left temporarily paralyzed.
Although Shawn's first dance experience was with a Metropolitan Opera ballerina and he achieved some success as part of an exhibition ballroom team, it was meeting Ruth St. Denis in 1914 that would set his artistic life in motion.
Shawn was honored with the Capezio Award (1957), the Dance Magazine Award (1970) and he was knighted by the King of Denmark for his efforts on behalf of the Royal Danish Ballet.

In 1914, she married one of her disciples, a young dancer from Denver named Ted Shawn (1891-1972).
From then until their separation in 1931, the couple conducted the Denishawn School of Dancing in California, created new pieces and toured with their own troupe, the Denishawn Dancers.

A documentary on Jacob's Pillow founder Ted Shawn (the only out of the bunch Tuesday) directed by Elliot Caplan, written by Richard Philp, and researched by Norton Owen, followed.
"The Men Who Danced: The Story of Ted Shawn's Male Dancers 1933-1940" (1986) connects with the members of Ted Shawn's original all-male company at their Jacob's Pillow reunion.
Historic footage of the troupe was unearthed and used for the first time in the making of this film that deals on many levels with the idea of preservation.
