Teddy Pendergrass was born on March 26th, 1950 in Philadelphia, PA. He was raised by his mother, Ida Pendergrass, a God-fearing South Carolina sharecropper's daughter.
Teddy's desire for a career in music was firmly fixed the night he attended a Jackie Wilson concert at Philadelphia's famed Uptown Theater and watched Wilson's entrance and how he controlled the audience with his performance.
Teddy returned to recording the year after his accident and recorded "Love Language." The follow-up to that album was 1985's "Working it Back," which was followed by "Joy" in 1988, "Truly Blessed" in 1990, "A Little More Magic" in 1993 and "You and I" in 1997.

Pendergrass' didn't just sing of earthly love though, also turning his adulation towards the heavens above during "Truly Blessed." The drawn out gospel jaunt included a backing choir that appeared from backstage who took the crowd up to the mountaintop for several minutes of spiritual scatting, returning to earthly realms after their holy ghost high.
Pendergrass left the stage upon its conclusion for a much-deserved break allowing his backup singers and dancers to take center stage.

Pendergrass had sung bedroom ballads before "Close the Door," but that song in particular resonated -- and still resonates -- with his listeners, Philly soul and quiet storm fans alike.
The bipolar nature of Teddy, with its quiet storm first side and disco-soul second, gives it a consistent flow that prolongs the mutually stimulating moods of each side.
This is a marked difference from the likewise rock-solid Teddy Pendergrass (1977) and Life Is a Song Worth Singing (1978), which generally alternated up-tempo steppers cuts with down-tempo slow jams.
