Teddy Riley (new jack swing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Teddy Riley (born Edward Theodore Riley, October 8, 1967 in Harlem, New York) is an American RandB and hip hop singer, songwriter, musician and producer who was the ring leader of the most influential groups of RandB in two separate decades - Guy in the 80s and Blackstreet in the 90s.
Riley is mostly responsible for making a successful fusion of hip-hop and RandB in the late 1980s which was called New jack swing.
Riley got the idea of forming his own group after it was suggested to him that a younger singer named Aaron Hall was looking to join a group.

 New Jack Swing
New Jack Swing emerged in the latter half of the decade, reaching a zenith around 1990, with the huge success of Bell Biv Devoe’s single Poison.
The term “swing” referred to the rhythm, which often employed a combination of straight 8ths, 16th-note shuffles, and 16th-note swing patterns (in Europe, the music was sometimes known as Swingbeat and this name survives in the Netherlands, which for some reason is a stronghold of New Jack Swing fandom).

Recorded in '91 (when new jack swing was on the downslope), brief moments of revival sprung up with the release of this album.
I remember seeing New Jack City back when I was in the 3rd grade and I am now a sophomore in college and there were two songs that were on this soundtrack that always stood out.

The same year saw the release of the Wreckx-n-Effects track New Jack Swing, another possible source for the name; in either case, it seems clear that 1991's mainstream press frenzy was symptomatic of the genre's quick slide into irrelevance.

Although not as well-known as other New York hip-hop acts of the early '80s, Staten Island's Force M.D.'s were a vital crew in the early history of street hip-hop and one of the first vocal groups to fuse doo wop-influenced harmonies with hip-hop beats.
Picking up from New Edition and especially New Kids on the Block, who were subsiding just as they emerged, Color Me Badd, along with Boyz II Men, was the teen-oriented male vocal group of their day, complete with hype, videos, silly haircuts, and four interweaving mediocre tenor voices.
Riley has masterminded an album that blends street-level rhythms with urban soul and pop crossover potential, adding two new members -- Eric Williams and Mark Middleton -- to the lineup in order to position Blackstreet as an heir to the classic R&B vocal group tradition.

The Neptunes are right now working at the top of the hip-hop food chain, virtually dominating urban radio with a battery of hits as inescapable as Teddy Riley's new jack swing once was.
In a sense, it's easy to see why Williams and Hugo's sound has become as saturated as it has: As hip-hop and R&B increasingly lord over Top 40 radio, breeding a generation of youngsters for whom turntables and guitars are natural complements, a juicy cross-pollination is bound to occur.
The result is a climate in which someone like Jay-Z, once a paragon of hip-hop's austere heart of darkness, follows up a hit that cribs from Annie with the Neptunes-helmed "I Just Wanna Love U," which samples a wicked flute line from The Gods Must Be Crazy and slithers like Axl Rose's hips.
