PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Selected Artist Biography - Teddy Wilson
Wilson remained with Goodman until 1939, playing on many of the latter's small group recordings and also on recordings under his own name with other important swing musicians, above all Billie Holiday and Lester Young.
His early recordings reveal a percussive style, with single-note lines and bold staccatos, that was indebted to Earl Hines; but by the time of his first performances with Goodman he had fashioned a distinctive legato idiom that served him for the rest of his career.
Wilson's style was based on the use of conjunct 10ths in the left hand; by emphasizing the tenor voice and frequently omitting the root of the chord until the end of the phrase he created great harmonic refinement and contrapuntal interest.

Teddy Wilson is heard during a 1983 live solo set in a Danish nightclub, for the most part sticking to songs that had been part of his repertoire for decades, many of which he had recorded as a member of the Benny Goodman Quartet.
Pianist Teddy Wilson's style had been unchanged for decades by the time he recorded this LP for Classic Jazz but, although his playing was somewhat predictable, it still sounded swinging and flawless.

 Teddy Wilson 1946 - Wal-Mart
Wilson set high standards of musicianship, which militated against the band's commercial success, and it survived for barely a year.
A naturally restrained musician, Wilson's fleet playing and the elegant poise of his solos (the latter a facet that was reflected in his personal demeanour), combined to make him an influential figure in the development of jazz piano.
Wilson's big band was another musical landmark, although the band's failure to attain commercial success was something which still clearly rankled with its leader four decades after it had folded.

Many critics consider Teddy Wilson one of the greatest jazz pianists of all-time.
Wilson left Goodman in 1939 to form his own big band, which included such top musicians as Doc Cheatham, Ben Webster, Rudy Powell, and Hal Baker.
Wilson's subtle style failed to win over audiences, however, who often complained that his orchestra sounded ''too white.'' He disbanded the group after only a year and formed a sextet that played regularly at the Cafe Society in New York from 1940 to 1946.

The pianist is accompanied by his son, Teddy Wilson, Jr., on drums and bassist George Duvivier, with vibraphone master Lionel Hampton (who had worked with Wilson in the Benny Goodman Quartet), clarinetist Jerry Fuller, and conga player Sam Turner added on some tracks.
The lightly swinging quartet version of "One O'Clock Jump" is hampered somewhat by the incongruous addition of the congas; it succeeds in giving a new sound to Count Basie's theme song but somehow doesn't quite mesh; this track is also prematurely faded at an awkward time.
Fortunately the congas are missing from the straight-ahead interpretation of "I Can't Get Started." Although this is not an essential date by Teddy Wilson, there are enough enjoyable tracks to make it worth the investment, if found at a budget price.
