As far as the Tedzhen and Atrek waters are concerned, the treaty signed in February 1926 between Iran and Turkmenistan remains in force.
This corresponds to an average of 0.75 km³/year for the Tedzhen River and 0.06 km³/year for the Atrek River.
Irrigation in Turkmenistan is mainly concentrated in oases, where water is diverted from the Murghab, Atrek and Tedzhen rivers and from the Kara Kum canal for the irrigated areas in the south, or from a system of canals which have been built along the Amu Darya River in the north.

Rising in Afghanistan at an elevation of 3,000 meters, the Tedzhen (Tejen) is one of the main suppliers of water to northern Afghanistan, northeast Iran, and southern Turkmenistan.
Within Afghanistan and Iran the river is known as the Hari Rud, taking the name Tedzhen only within Turkmenistan, where it waters the city and oasis of the same name.
Within Turkmenistan it flows via two reservoirs, the Tedzhen (142 million cubic meters) and the Second Tedzhen (180 million cubic meters) into a broad valley where it splits into several channels before drying in the Kara Kum Desert.

In February, 1923, the authorities declared that the Ufa brotherhood was engaged in anti-Soviet propaganda, and Vladyka Andrew was again arrested and, on February 24, sentenced to three years in exile, first in Tashkent and then in Ashkhabad.
At the beginning of June, 1923, Vladyka was arrested in Tashkent and was in prison for a short time before being exiled to what is now the town of Tedzhen in Turkmenia.
In April, 1924 he was in prison in cell number 7 of the prison in Tedzhen.

Iran, subject to a U.S. economic embargo, is hailing the railroad as the first concrete achievement in a strategy to build its role as a regional economic power.

The region is bordered by Tedzhen (Harirud) river separating Turkmenistan from Iran in the west, Afghanistan in the south and Kugitang mountains in the east.
The area between Tedzhen and Murghab rivers is known as Badghyz, the portion further eastward, as Karabil.
The clay and sand soils of the ecoregion lie over a thick layer of continental deposits built of mainly sedimentary rock (sandstone and aleurolite) with occasional volcanic outcrops.
