  Crazy About You:
Reflections on the Meanings of Contemporary Teen Pop Music
Young listeners of teen pop may be especially likely to interpret the lyrics of this music genre and use their meanings to define themselves and the roles of others in their lives.
Teen pop is then to be understood as neither than ‘mass culture’ nor ‘folk art’, but rather as popular culture, a culture whose symbolic resources are highly meaningful for the people who consume it.
Teen pop is a music genre that has been around for many years, but only recently has assumed the enormous commercial influence and some of the typical style characteristics that make it so deserving of close scrutiny.

Bubblegum pop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some of the defining characteristics of bubblegum pop include catchy melodies, simple three-chord structures, simple harmonies, and repetitive riffs or "hooks." Bubblegum pop is also characterized by its lightweight lyrics (which may include nursery rhymes or nonsense lyrics), often surrounding themes of romance and courtship.
Critics of bubblegum pop maintain that the music is void of artistic merit and that the performers are "groomed" by record labels to depend on physical appearance as opposed to musical or artistic talent.
Bubblegum pop then appeared to be declining at the turn of the early millennium, as audiences grew tired of the many boy bands and pop princesses, and as well as the popularity of Hip hop music started.

The Anti-Britneys, New Crop Of Teen Pop Queens Reject Sex-Symbol Status - CBS News
From Frank Sinatra to The Beatles to Britney Spears, teen idols have shaped fashion and pop culture for decades.
Teen pop's once white-hot sales have fallen off, and while Spears' latest album, "Britney," is still a top-seller with 3.8 million copies sold, it did not do as well as her previous discs.
In fact, R&B singer turned pop-rock princess Pink has sold nearly as many copies as Spears with her second disc, "M!ssundaztood." Released last fall, it has sold 3 million copies, and she has made a point in her music and interviews of how un-Britney-like she is, with her wild attitude and punk hairstyle.

Teen Pop - The Best of Mandy Moore Mandy Moore / CD / 2004
Of all the major teen pop stars who ran wild at the turn of the millennium, Mandy Moore was perhaps the least successful, if she's judged merely on terms of chart success.
And while there are no knock-out singles here -- although her biggest hit, "Crush," comes close -- there's a greater musical variety, and the chronological running order emphasizes that Mandy Moore is growing as a singer and recording artist, getting better with each subsequent album instead of stagnating like many of her peers.
As a result, this turns out to be one of the better artifacts of the teen pop boom -- as an album, it's stronger and more enjoyable than almost any other teen pop record from its time, and by the time it's over, you're curious about where Moore will go next.

A new pop group has run into controversy not because of its lyrics or dance moves, but because none of its four members are more than 12 years old.
The move to sign young girls, so-called tweenies, follows on from the chart success of such teenage stars as Billie, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera - the 16-year-old who scored a US number one this month.

A pop backlash is now brewing, veteran Top 40 consultant Guy Zapoleon says -- just like the one that erupted on the heels of the last Debbie Gibson, New Kids on the Block and Tiffany teen tidal wave 10 years ago.
But without the pure pop to bridge the gap between the urban and the rock extremes, Top 40 will soon see "the beginning of the end of its healthy rebirth cycle," says Zapoleon.

 Teen Pop - T-Squad T-Squad / CD / 2007
There is a lot of teen pop out there, much of which is so produced and tweaked that voices and choruses become nearly indistinguishable from one another, while keyboards blend into drum machines blend into prepubescent voices blend into an unrecognizable jumble of major chords and melodies.
Yes, the pieces here are saccharine and inoffensive, and for the most part sound not only very much like one another but also like other Top-40 hits, but these are characteristics of much of pop music in general, not just of T-Squad.
This, at least, is done well, and smartly, and so if contemporary teen pop is what you're looking for, you could do a lot worse than this.
