TEENAGE FANCLUB - PAUL QUINN INTERVIEW in THE iZINE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Teenage Fanclub have higher priorities than being the biggest band the world: as long as they sell enough records to keep that recording contract secure they're happy enough to keep winding down a path littered with gorgeous filigree pop songs.
Born and bred in Edinburgh, Scotland, nearly a decade ago, the Teenies were the sporran of the loins of such seminal Scottish outfits as the much-loved BMX Bandits (who themselves have finally just released a new shiny spinning object, mostly to critical disdain) and latterly the quaintly-tagged Boy Hairdressers.
Teenage Fanclub are a glorious enigma in the '90s.

The Fanclub's mesh of yearning, ethereal melody and cranked, feed-backing guitars came together superbly on "The Concept," "Metal Baby," and the thrashing "Star Sign"--mini-blizzards of mellifluousness that yoked Alex Chilton to Crazy Horse and the Ramones.
Teenage Fanclub is one of the most underrated bands of the 90's.
Teenage Fanclub is one of those bands who garners a lot of respect from critics, maintains their high level of indie cred, but can still put out songs with lyrics like "When you tick I'll be your tock" and not really be self-effacing about it.

 Teenage Fanclub: Man-Made (2005): Reviews
Man-Made is, to be sure, the least immediate record Teenage Fanclub has made since Thirteen, but at a compact and finely-tuned forty-two minutes it avoids the flaws of that under-edited and under-cooked record and nestles itself softly into the heart of every TFC fan as another low-key modern classic.
While nobody could accuse Teenage Fanclub of taking huge creative risks, more often than not the tracks on Man-Made do resemble something along the lines of '70s soft rock group America backed by Stereolab -- which is a very cool thing.
You could dismiss Teenage Fanclub as not being original, but that would be missing the point.

Man-Made is no exception to the rule and should be universally heralded by critics as one of Teenage Fanclub's best efforts (if not their very best).
If the hundreds of bands that were launched in the wake of Teenage Fanclub's popularity weren't enough evidence, then Man-Made is proof positive of why the Fannies no longer merely pay homage to their power pop influences; they have firmly established their place among the upper echelons of power pop's most important and influential artists.

Indie rock wouldn't be the same without all of these bands inspiring each other, as evidenced by the late '90s indie pop generation of Sebadoh, Superdrag, and Versus.
The same can be said of Teenage Fanclub's half-dozen albums since, making them one of the most endearing and classic bands of the last decade.

Teenage Fanclub - Biography - AOL Music
After a brief stint with the BMX Bandits, Blake reunited with Love and McGinley to form Teenage Fanclub in 1989; drummer Francis McDonald, a fellow BMX Bandit, completed the original lineup, although McDonald was replaced by fan Brendan O'Hare during sessions for the group's debut album, 1990's A Catholic Education.
Although the title of the 1993 follow-up Thirteen served immediate notice that Teenage Fanclub's Big Star fetish continued unabated, the album's bitter lyrical outlook and heavier guitar sound owed much to Neil Young, while the epic closer, "Gene Clark," honored the pioneering Byrds co-founder.

Which is to say they are a band of equals with all three members consistently cranking out song after song of well-written melodic rock that references such icons of the genre as the Byrds, the Beach Boys, Badfinger, and yes Big Star.
However, as is the tradition with most power pop craftsmen, the general approach is to aim for the perfect pop song each time out, resulting in albums that are rarely disappointing for fans, but which can rarely claim innovation or edginess.
Happily, Man-Made lives up to this tradition and is as good an album as any Teenage Fanclub has made since Grand Prix.

Eight albums into their career, no one else comes close to their mastery of the genre, and when you think about it, the pieces for their run of remarkably consistent albums were in place from the beginning.
McEntire's influence is felt keenly on the edges of the music, though, in the textures of the guitars and bass and in the injection of a host of buzzing and burbling keyboards low in the mix.
It's unlikely at this point that any of their fans would want them to completely overhaul their approach anyhow, and indeed those fans are treated to the band's best collection of songs in more than a decade here.

Arising from the gene pool of a strong local indie-pop scene guided in the late '80s by the Pastels and Vaselines, and ultimately given their big push into the world by Creation Records (the playground of Scottish entrepreneur Alan McGee), there came a new generation of international bands, foremost among them Teenage Fanclub.

The title Man-Made runs the risk of messing with diehards' notion of what Teenage Fanclub is all about--melodic, classic-era indie pop a la Badfinger and Big Star--but concerns that the Scottish four-piece has swerved from its organic sensibility in favor of something souped-up and synthetic are unfounded.

Five years is a long time to make fans wait, but the quality of the material and willingness to tinker with their fairly rigid pop formula has resulted in another memorable, extremely listenable collection of songs, and hopefully a harbinger of things to come.
