Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) are a fictional group of four anthropomorphic turtle brothers, who, as one might infer from the name, are also teenagers, mutants and ninjas.
While the comic was meant for an older audience, the cartoon was standard children's fare and typically avoided overt human violence and any semblance of real conflict.
A fifth turtle was introduced, a female named "Venus de Milo" who was skilled in the mystical arts of the shinobi, and the series took place generally after the storyline of the 1987 cartoon series, as Shredder had been defeated and the Ninja Turtles had new villains.

 ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ (PG)
From their origins in 1984 in a daffy fl-and-white comic book to 1988's television cartoon series, from action figures to today's unveiling of a multimillion-dollar live-action feature film, the TMNT phenomenon has grown progressively bigger -- much like the TMNTs themselves -- albeit without the benefit of radioactive ooze.
The makers of the movie "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" undoubtedly envision it as another "Batman," and a similar hype machine is already in place (Entertainment Weekly counts 600 TMNT products currently on the market).
Splinter was once pet to a martial arts master, while the pet-shop turtles were dumped down a manhole and into a sewer, where they landed in the radioactive sludge that made them grow human-sized and upright, and gave them the gift of gab.

The Ninja Master (called Splinter) has trained these four teenage animals (named after his 4 favorite Renaissance artists - Michaeangelo; Leonardo; Donatello; and Raphael.) in the art of Ninjitsu and they use their skills to combat evil as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The book had a cult following and in 1986 somebody decided a toy-line and cartoon (which would be more kid friendly then the edgier and serious fl and white comic book from which they sprung) would be a perfect way to flesh them out.
The turtles were wacky, practically comical in their attitude (complete with surfer jargon, and a love for pizza and partying) and this made them a huge success throughout the late 80's and early 90's.

The Bad Fads Museum - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Taken under the wing of the venerable sage Splinter (a rat who had undergone the same transformation and was trained by a master ninja warrior), the foursome used their unique abilities and training to fight against criminals, while always looking for teenage fun and frivolity.
By 1990, the cartoon appeared each day on more than 125 television stations, the movies were hits at the box office, and the comic book was selling at a rate of 125,000 each month, making it the most successful fl and white comic book in history.
While the turtles have not quite disappeared, they suffered from oversaturation and from the usual coming of other fads to take their place.

Of course the comic book violence would be toned down for the cartoon, but there was plenty of room left for the action and humor that helped the Ninja Turtles achieve their popularity.
Regardless, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have made a significant mark on popular culture and it is wonderful to see a second volume of the original series available on DVD.

The turtles’ appeal came from their humorous and good-natured comments about the world of superheroes and their approach to crime fighting.
During that time, the turtles’ popularity thrived and they even made their big screen debut in 1990 in the highly popular live-action movie that became a blockbuster.
The first episode introduces the main characters (the turtles, April, Yoshi, and Shredder), the second introduces the sidekicks (Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady), the third introduces some important future characters (Baxter, the mousers), and the fourth introduces the concept of Dimension X (Krang’s army, the Neutrinos), all leading to the thrilling finale in the fifth episode.

I recently bought an old VHS copy of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie" and I must say that this movie is still great even after 14 years.
That's good considering it also faced heavy competition from another comic book adaptation that year, "Dick Tracy," which was directed by Warren Beatty and was quite groundbreaking, on its own terms of course.
One particularly big difference between the comics and the film is that the literary source material is quite violent (and not to mention very bloody in some spots).

The Turtles are Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello.
Turning the concept into an actual comic book story involved considerably more effort than simply dreaming up the name and situation — and, since it didn't seem the sort of thing Marvel or DC would go for, getting the comic published took more effort yet.
In 1988, Archie Comics licensed the TV version, giving fans a second track of Turtles stories in comics — Mirage Press continued to publish them in fl and white for a mostly-adult audience, while Archie did them in color, aimed at kids.

Random Acts of Nerdness: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Revisited
TMNT was a big hit in the late eighties and early nineties, spawning cartoons, movies, action figures, countless novelties, (ironically) comic books, and a generation of children who have had the thoughts of ninjas etched in their brains for the rest of their lives.
The finally nagging tidbit I noticed after watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is how hot April O’Neil is. I mean, she always wears that form-fitting yellow suit, and her character design is busty and drawn to give her a flirtatious appearance.
Even the Turtles notice this in the costume party episode, where April dresses up and all of them start drooling over her like hormone-crazed teenagers, which I suppose they are.
