Although no longer within Yorkshire, Teesdale (and specifically the River Tees) used to mark the border of the North Riding prior to the 1974 local government reorganisation, and so is sometimes still described as being the most northern of the so-called "Yorkshire" dales.
Principal attractions include Barnard Castle and the Bowes Museum, as well as High Force (one of England's highest and most spectacular waterfalls) and Cauldron Snout - both of which are taken in by the route of the Pennine Way long distance footpath.
