The fragment of tegula shown above appears to be a modified triangular tegula as already seen.
The marks of the saw are evident in the cut face and indicate a cutting angle of between 55 and 60 degrees from the horizonal, with the fragment shown being on the left of the blade if sawn from above.
Since the length of the tile was reduced deliberately, it is presumed that it formed part of either the top course or the bottom course of tegulae butting up to a hip roof.

Heat shock proteins, thermotolerance, and biogeography in intertidal Tegula snails   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Heat shock proteins (hsp’s) confer thermotolerance in organisms by preventing the denaturation of proteins during the heat stress and by facilitating the refolding of already damaged proteins.
To examine this effect, we compared the phenotypic variation of the heat shock response in several marine snail species of the genus Tegula that occupy widely differing thermal niches along the sub- to intertidal transition.
Protein synthesis in intertidal Tegula species was heat-inactivated at temperatures only slightly above the highest body temperatures recorded, and because they induce the energetically costly heat shock response frequently, intertidal species may live close to the upper end of their thermal-tolerance range.

HMS Student Papers 1963 - Orientation and response of Tegula funebralis to tidal current and turbulence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Abstract: Tegula funebralis is activated when subjected to current and/or air turbulence; this behavior agrees with Cloudsley-Thompson's remark (1961, p.
Further, current causes Tegula to orient into the flow, and also keeps them down near the bottom; if the current is sufficiently strong, however, they will often turn and head for shelter at the first respite.
It was shown that Tegula changed their orientation to current after a few hours: this may be a set pattern of response, or perhaps the snails became fatigued.

Tile - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A tile is a small, manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as clay or stone used for covering roofs, floors, and walls, or other objects such as tabletops.
The word is derived from the French word tuile, which is, in turn, from the Latin word tegula, meaning a roof tile composed of baked clay.
Less precisely, the modern term can refer to any sort of construction tile or similar object, such as rectangular counters used in playing games (see tile-based game).

HMS Student Papers 1963 - Distribution limitations of the marine gastropod Tegula funebralis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Abstract: Tegula funebralis displays a characteristic "rise behavior," probably in response to gravity.
The functional value of this is uncertain, but may be correlated with exposure to air; although such exposure is not necessary, it seems to be "preferred." T. funebralis is perhaps in the process of evolving into a land snail.
The animals inhabit zones (MLLW) high enough to be exposed to the air at least once per day; the universality of the tides would explain the remarkable constancy of the lower limit.
