The surface topography and ultrastructure of the tegument of Paranaella luquei Kohn, Baptista-Farias and Cohen, 2000, a microcotylid monogenean parasite from the gills of Hypostomus regani (Ihering, 1905) (Loricariidae) was studied by scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
By SEM, it was observed that the tegument presents transversal ridges, forming folds in the ventral and dorsal surfaces and microvillous-like tegumental projections in the anterior and median regions of body.
The tegument is made up of a syncytium delimited by apical and basal plasma membranes, containing inclusion bodies and mitochondria, connected to the nucleated region by means of cytoplasmatic processes.

 FLATWORM
The larval tegument is similar to that of the adult and has a distal cytoplasmic, syncytial layer at the surface with internal cytons.
The tegument of adult trematodes is not modified with microvilluslike structures that increase absorptive surface area, but some species have deep pits and channels that may serve that purpose (Figure 15.9).
It is a bulbous ending in the tegument with a short, modified cilium projecting from it, and the cilium is enclosed along its length by a thin layer of tegument.

The results confirm that glucose is absorbed by the tegument; however, galactose and mannose appear to be absorbed by the gut.
Investigations into the absorptive activities of the tegument have shown that carbohydrates are actively, and in some instances exclusively, transported into the organism by that structure (1,2).
Glucose was chosen because of its role in schistosome metabolism (16), because it is taken up exclusively via the tegument (2), and because Stein and Lumsden (13) and Wilson and Barnes (6) have reported that mucopolysaccharides are important components of the schistosome tegument.

CHAPTER IV [The Blood and the Third Anatomical Element by Antoine Bechamp]
That which has given rise to doubt as to the existence of a tegument to the red globule is that the blood steeped in water seems to be altogether dissolved in it: the globules disappear so completely that under the microscope not a vestige of them can be discovered.
But, as we shall presently see, that apparent solution of the globules is only the osmotic issuance of the interior part, soluble in water, across the envelope: the cellular tegument remaining entire is invisible under the microscope only because its refracting index is the same as that of the ambient liquid.
The mode of demonstrating the unbroken tegument of the red globule of the blood, steeped in water, consists in rendering its refraction different from that of the liquid which results from this mixture.

Realtime Herpesvirus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The HSV-1 virion comprises three concentric compartments: the capsid (100 nm in diameter, containing the viral DNA), the tegument (a shell surrounding the capsid composed of approximately 15 proteins) and the envelope (approximately 200 nm in diameter, composed of a trilamminar membrane containing 11 glycoproteins) (15).
Certain tegument proteins are located near sites within the nucleus where the capsid is constructed, consistent with the notion that they are incorporated into the virion in the nucleus (7, 29).
In contrast, other tegument proteins are located primarily in the cytoplasm, consistent with the idea that the initial nuclear envelopment of the capsid is transient and that tegument proteins are incorporated and final envelopment occurs in cytoplasmic compartments (4, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 30, 33).

Molecular Identification of a Schistosoma mansoni Tegumental Protein with Similarity to Cytoplasmic Dynein Light Chains ...
The tegument covering the cercariae, schistosomula, lung stage worms, and adult worms is an anucleated syncytium that serves as the protective barrier between the parasite and the host.
The tegument in three of these four life stages (not cercariae) is bound by a unique double lipid bilayer structure called the heptalaminate membrane.
The organelles found in the tegument are made in the subtegumental cell, which contains all of the necessary components for protein synthesis and organelle development (5).

The tegument is the metabolically active syncytial outer surface of the parasite.

In the past 30 years the teguments of members of nearly all groups of parasitic platyhelminthes and most of their developmental stages have been investigated.

Note that there is an intensively stained membranocalyx, whereas the tegument is free of stain, except for a slight reaction in the ductules (CO) that form connections to the subtegumental cells.

While the adult worms possess a functional mouth and gut, most nutrients are imported across the parasite’s body surface (or tegument).
One protein complex that is important in the uptake of amino acids across the tegument by intra-vascular schistosomes is designated SPRM1 (Schistosome permease 1).
When SPRM1lc is expressed with a heterologous (human) heavy chain in Xenopus oocytes, it facilitates the transport of the basic amino acids arginine, lysine, histidine as well as leucine, phenylalanine, methionine and glutamine.

The identification and characterization of proteins associated with the tegument is central to our understanding of the function of this structure, and also provides probes for defining the mechanisms of membrane formation.
Thus the genes for these proteins are regulated during development and are coexpressed in the tegument of adult worms.
On the other hand the adsorption of soluble proteins derived from the parasite to the surface seems to be relevant for stimulation of a strong protective immunity (as is the case of the vaccine candidates GST, TPI, GAPDH and PGK).

 BIOL414/614 at UMBC - mRNA_transport_to_uninfected_cells_by_a_viral_tegument_protein
Sciortino et al studies the herpes simplex virions and have identified a protein dubbed, VP22, which functions as a sort of vector to mediate the transfer of viral mRNA to uninfected cells for subsequent expression and infection.
Thus far VP22 is the only tegument protein isolated with such an activity of actually packaging mRNA and transporting it to particularly uninfected cells.
Previous literature reports two proteins with distinct functions of first packaging and then transporting viral mRNA, thus the isolation of VP22 is a pioneer and is in a class all by itself.
