He turned to see Melvill plunge into the water, with the Colour in its case, only to have his horse shot from under him.
Melvill asked for help to save the colours but it was torn from his grasp by the strong current and disappeared.

Melvill, exhausted after his grim ride, urged his horse into the river, and although an accomplished horseman, his mount so plunged and reared on the slippery stones that, hampered as he was by the cased Colour and its colour-pike, he was thrown into the river.
Melvill and Coghill were exhumed, placed in coffins, and in the presence of Colonels Glyn and Degacher (commanding 2/24th) and several other officens, were reburied a few yards away from the spot where they fell.
Melvill, but in the meantime Lord Chelmsford cancelled his move as he could not be spared, as every officer was needed for the forthcoming campaign.

 Isandlwana
During the height of the battle of Isandlwana, this Colour was famously carried on horseback from the battlefield by Lieutenant Teignmouth Melvill down the Fugitives' Trail down which the soldiers fled as the Zulus were overwhelming the camp.
Melvill lost the Colour as he swam across the raging Buffalo River, but it was later retrieved and now hangs in the regimental chapel in Brecon Cathedral, Wales.
Melvill and his companion, Lieutenant Nevill Coghill were killed as they reached the Natal border on the other side of the river.

Teignmouth Melvill was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 36 years old, and a Lieutenant in the 1st Bn., 24th Regiment of Foot (later The South Wales Borderers), British Army during the Zulu War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

Pulleine is alleged to have said to Melvill, “You, as senior lieutenant, will take the colours, and make the best of way from here!” At which Pulleine handed over the cased Queen’s Colour of the 1st Battalion of the 24th Regiment to Melvill.
Melvill was encumbered by his precious charge and was swept from his mount, but still he held the Colour.

Melvill lost the colours as he tried to cross the Buffalo River, and as he and Coghill were climbing Mpethe Hill on the Natal side, they were set upon and killed.
However, there is a strong local tradition that claims the Melvill and Coghill were killed by Natal natives who feared the Zulu reprisals should Natal be invaded.
In 1906, Melvill's widow was among several who petitioned King Edward VII to recognize the principle of posthumous awards.

Coghill reached the far bank but Melvill, impeded by the Colour, was washed off his horse and carried downstream into deep water in which he lost his hold on the Colour.

Today his pitiful bones can now be seen poking through the gaps in a small cairn.
Meanwhile in the dust and confusion Melvill looses sight of Anstey, when he does again catch sight he can see he is surrounded but his men are fighting like demons.
Nothing he can do now, but to try and save some kind of honour.
