NTSC-uk review > Nintendo GameBoy Advance > Tekken Advance
Most people would be sceptical that such a graphically advance game such as Tekken could be possible on a system that is designed to play host to mainly 2D games, but thanks to a lot of fiddling and 2D mode 7 trickery Namco have managed to create a respectably looking hand-held representation of Tekken.
The backgrounds in Tekken games have always been 2D images with rotating 3D floors so this aspect was not difficult to implement on the GBA but the 3D characters were always going to a bit difficult on the GBA.
Namco have announced that they will be releasing Tekken Advance 2 later this year (in Japan at least) so it may be worth waiting for that version instead as it will be likely that they will be concentrating more on making a lasting game now that they have managed to get the graphics engine working.

Because combatants are proficient in fighting styles ranging from tae kwan do to wrestling, Tekken Advance boasts an astounding variety of moves.
Compared to the massive rendered cutscenes in "Tekken 3," Tekken Advance looks like a small-scale side story of the series, rather than a fully-fledged sequel.
Put into perspective and it being an ambitious "hit the ground running" success by Namco, Tekken Advance is a stunning achievement for GBA and deserves the praise lavished on it.

The main visual difference between this and other versions of Tekken is that the characters on the Game Boy Advance appear to be pre-rendered, animated sprites rather than 3D models being animated on the fly.
It still retains the camera zoom effect for when characters get closer or farther away from each other, and a pseudo-3D gameplay is made possible with the characters' ability to sidestep short distances, just like in the arcade.

 Review: Tekken Advance
See, Namco has tried to recreate the slick and dramatic visual style of the Tekken games that appeared on PSone and PS2, with sweeping camera moves and mock 3D visuals – the characters and backdrops are animated in 2D, while the arena floor rotates in 3D.
As with all the Tekken games, you can string together blistering combos and there are masses of moves to master for each fighter, but where this game falls short is in its lack of gameplay innovation and play modes.
The brawling action is fast, fluid and tough, but it's unlikely to knock you out, unless you're a mental midget who lives in a cupboard and are dazzled by paperclips and the amazing transparency of tracing paper.
