Tekki nidan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The series of Tekki kata were derived from the older, original Nifanchin kata.
The name Tekki itself (and the older Nifanchin) translates to "Iron Horse." Contrary to popular belief, the kata are not designed to teach fighting on a lateral line or against a wall.
Tekki Nidan is the second of the series of three katas.

Tekki Nidan means "second degree of iron horse." All three Tekki kata are learned between the ranks of 3rd kyu brown belt to 1st kyu brown belt.
Although all kata are important, Tekki Nidan and Sandan are not studied extensively until at least the first fl belt level, which is the rank of Shodan, meaning "first degree."
The predominant techniques/positions of this kata are the same as Tekki Shodan: side stance and stomping feet, as well as the emphasis placed on lower body strength and hip vibration, or "chindo." There are 24 movements which require approximately 50 seconds to perform.

 Shotokan Karate
The three Tekki kata were introduced by Anko Itosu who derrived them from from an older kata which he learned from a Chinaman from the village of Tomari.
The Tekki kata are all performed along a straight horizontal line using sideways stepping movements and entirely based in "kiba dachi" or horse-riding stance.
Tekki nidan has some resemblance to Tekki Shodan, and includes some of the same techniques, but used in a different manner.

He speacialised in the Tekki Kata and made Funokoshi spend three years learning each, admonishing that they were at once the easiest to learn but also the most difficult to learn.
The original name Naihanchi was changed to Tekki by Funokoshi and although Tekki Shodan is an old Shuri-te Kata, Nidan and Sandan were created by Itosu as strengthening and training Kata, basing them upon the original but eliminating the dangerous techniques.
In theory this is identical to Tekki Nidan.

As Rob Redmond states, "The second and third Tekki kata are generally considered to be Free Kata rather than Required Kata for examination purposes.
The first Tekki kata is required not only for most 3rd kyu examinations, but also for elimination kata competition in most Shotokan tournaments.
Another technical difference between Tekki Sandan and Tekki Shodan and Nidan is the way in which the blocking and covering action is performed (the most distinctive technique in Tekki).

Taikyoku Nidan is the same as Taikyoku Shodan except that all the punches are performed at high (chin) level and in Taikyoku Sandan all the blocks change from down block in front stance to middle inside-outside block in back stance with all punches at high level.
Naihanchi Shodan was revised by Itosu who created the second and third forms of this kata using the original as a model.

I'll explain, it is a normal practice for us to use modified Taikyoku kata as a training method, say, replace all oizuki with maegeri, or with yoko geri kekomi or whatever.
I think that is the same concept we hold for T. Nidan and Sandan, they are variants and could be considered nothing other than training alternatives.
I thought that the kata listed were "Tekki Shodan, Tekki Nidan, Tekki Sandan, Tekki Den"...I presume from your statement that there is a fifth?
