 Teknaf port to be privatised to boost border trade with Burma
This is the first move under the second phase of the government’s plan to transfer the country’s 12 land ports to private operators for a period of 25 years, sources in the Bangladesh Land Port Authority (BLPA) said.
“The tender for Teknaf land port in Cox's Bazar has already been floated and it aims to hand over the operation of the port to the private sector before next October,” a BLPA senior official told Mizzima.
M/S Univern Port Services Limited was awarded the contract to handle the Teknaf land port in November 2003 as a test case to improve the operations of the land ports.

"The Teknaf group of Rohingyas are people of concern to UNHCR, as they fled Myanmar for the same reasons of persecution as the refugees in the camps who came here in a big influx in 1991-1992," explained UNHCR's representative in Bangladesh, Christopher Lee.
The Teknaf group formed after the Bangladesh government moved some 3,600 Rohingyas in 2003 from villages in the surrounding areas where they had been living for up to 10 years, to a spot along the Naf river.
Members of the joint mission to Teknaf said they would continue to pursue the humanitarian relocation of this group with the government.

Bangladeshi importers today suspended loading and unloading of goods at Teknaf land port, the only land port between Burma and Bangladesh, following a dispute between BDR and importers on imported achar (pickle) from Burma allegedly without valid document.
According to the claim of border traders, C&F agents and truckers, BDR held the said truck loaded with 11 tonnes of achar (pickle) imported from Burma, which were cleared at the Teknaf land port.
Denying the claim, the BDR commander Lt Col Ferdoush said that the import documents were found fake and tampered.

The reserve is located adjacent to coastal areas and offers a variety of habitats like evergreen and semi evergreen hill forests within the reserve, tidal mudflats and mangrove vegetation along the Naf River to the east, and broad sandy and rocky beaches along the Bay of Bengal bordering the reserve to the West.
