Telangana or Telingana is an unofficial region in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
Telangana was formerly part of Hyderabad State, and was added to Andhra Pradesh in 1956 on linguistic grounds following the States Reorganization Act.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi, a political party which advocates for a separate Telangana state, became part of the ruling coalition of Andhra Pradesh after the 2004 state legislative elections.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which is spearheading the movement for a separate Telangana state, has kicked up a fresh controversy over the future status of Hyderabad.
Asserting that Hyderabad will be the capital of Telangana state alone, TRS founder and Union Minister for Labour and Employment K Chandrasekhar Rao opposed demands for demarcating Hyderabad into a union territory, terming it an insidious move of "Andhra lobby" to complicate the issue.

The BJP's dependence on the TDP has reached a stage in which it had to accept quietly the 27 Assembly and nine Lok Sabha seats that were offered to it by the TDP as part of the seat-sharing arrangement between the two for the coming elections.
However, it remains to be seen if the TDP would be able to play such a role, in view of the strong anti-incumbency factor that is working against it and the strong pro-Telangana sentiment that will decide the fate of one of the three regions of the State.
