A telecentre is a public place where people can access computers, the Internet and other technologies that help them gather information and communicate with others at the same time as they develop digital skills.
While each telecentre is different, the common focus is on the use of technologies to support community and social development — reducing isolation, bridging the digital divide, promoting health issues, creating economic opportunities, reaching out to youths.
Telecentres exist in almost every country on the planet, although they sometimes go by different names (e.g.

In the context of this drive, a Telecentre was established in Manguzi, a remote town in the KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa.
The Telecentre is situated in the center of town and its purpose is to address this lack of telecommunications infrastructure by providing information technology (IT) and telecomm services to the community.
The Telecentre had a dial-up link to the Internet and the required infrastructure (account with an ISP, modem, fileserver, trained manager capable of providing the necessary support) and it was decided that the easiest option would be to utilize this link to provide Internet connectivity to the schools.

A Telecentre is a friendly local community centre equipped with high tech facilities.
A typical Telecentre has computers the Internet and email facilities, two-way 128kb videoconferencing, photocopiers, fax machines, printers TV and video machines, decoders, scanners and much more depending on the needs of the community.
All Telecentres are independent incorporated bodies owned by the communities in which they operate.

All of these projects are small ventures and they profit from their close association, both in terms of sharing overheads and in attracting a diverse range of people to the site.

They asked lots of good questions, and even managed to catch a few minor bugs in the site.
After the session, I went back to work with my colleagues from IDRC whom we've partnered with to write a book about the telecentre movement.
We spent the time finishing a storyboard of the book, complete with fake chapters, fake quotes and fake pictures (well, the pictures were real - they just weren't the ones we'd actually use in the book).
