Teleconverter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A teleconverter is a group of lenses which is mounted between the camera and a photographic lens.
The location of a teleconverter is such that the image produced by the objective is located behind the teleconverter in a distance smaller than its focal length.
The use of objective with teleconverter is less expensive than telephoto lens but also introduces some aberrations.

Tamron Learning Center:70-300mm/1.4X Teleconverter guide 35mm, Digital Lenses, Commack NY
The SP AF PRO-series teleconverters, with a newly designed optical construction (4-group/5-element for 1.4X and 4-group/7-element for 2X), are designed to be used with lenses that are F/2.8 and of focal lengths of 90mm or greater.
The standard Tamron teleconverters extend the focal length by a factor of 1.4 or 2 respectfully and sustain the same light loss factors as the Pro-series.
Though using a teleconverter on wide-angle lenses is never really recommended, these converters can be used with lenses that are wider than 90mm and are ideal for all lenses that are not F/2.8's.

Even when using the teleconverter, high quality images are maintained throughout the entire focal range all the way up to 420mm.
When you use a teleconverter, sometimes AF does not work correctly in dark places or on objects where the contrast is low.
When the 70-300 lens and 1.4X teleconverter are used together, the macro capability is increased to an incredible 1:1.43 magnification.

 AF Teleconverter for 35-70 f2.8?
The “useable” teleconverter for the AF 35~70/2.8(D) is the TC-14A.
First, it's not true that "Teleconverters work best with telephoto lenses, mostly 200mm and longer." Teleconverters work best when the desgn of the teleconverter matches the location of the exit pupil of the lens, and when the front element of the teleconverter can come as close as possible to the rear element of the lens.
Nikon actually had a series ot teleconverters (TC-14A and TC-201) that were made for lenses with exit pupils relatively close to the film (or sensor), and rear elements that were close to the mirror of an SLR camera.

The new dedicated 1.4x APO Teleconverter features a high performance 5 element/3 group optical design, and it is optimized for use with long telephoto and telezoom lenses.
The high performance optical characteristics of this teleconverter maintains the optical performance of the compatible lenses with which they can be used.
Using 10-pin electrical interfaces, there is no loss of autofocusing speed when this teleconverter is used with compatible H.S.M. type lenses for Canon, Sigma, and now Nikon AF cameras (except N50/F50 models).

A 2x teleconverter means you have 1/4th the light, i.e.
This is because the secondary mirror of most telescopes is not large enough to fully illuminate a 35mm frame when used "prime" (no teleconverter).
An alternative to the teleconverter (and a bit to complicated to discuss in a post) would be eyepiece projection.

The 1.45x to 5x teleconverters covered in this article are all of excellent optical quality with no light loss and varying degrees of vignetting at full zoom.
The compact Oly C-210 and C-180 teleconverters also have many attractive qualities, but both produce vignetting across all Oly rangefinder and C-2100UZ zoom settings—even when mounted on rangefinders with the Oly CLA-1 lens adapter and a single step-up ring.
The C-180 is an attractive teleconverter for Oly digital rangefinders in many respects, but the required 43-52 mm step-up ring can be hard to come by.

A brand new TC-17EII 1.7x teleconverter is also introduced (sold separately) to enhance the range of focal length options to factors of 1.4x, 2.0x and now, 1.7x respectively.
The use of such teleconverters with a wide aperture lens is an ideal way of adding extra focal length versatility without the expense and weight of additional lenses.

It seems that the pins on this teleconverter are slightly shorter than the pins on the original Nikonos RS lenses.
As such, the pins on the original lenses will eventually wear a very slight groove when mounting these lenses to the camera body which make the pins on the teleconverter not quite touch their contact points.
This problem will not occur on all camera bodies and it is not really the fault of the teleconverter.

 Teleconverter F-stop limitation
Teleconverters are designed for use with long lenses and sometimes cause problems with wide and normal lenses, but they work most of the time.
A f/4 lens with a 2x teleconverter results in a f/8 effective f-stop which can be too small (too large a f-figure) for your camera to auto focus.
I have used the nikkor50mm.1.8 lens and used vivitar 2x teleconverter with wonderful results the very high resolution of this lens when matched to the teleconverter really does deliver.

With dimensions of just 66 x 31.5mm (2.6 x 1.2 in.) and a weight of only 250g (8.8oz.)(approx.), the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II allows focal length to be extended by a factor of 1.7 times while retaining a sense of overall comfort in the hand.
Many such teleconverters can also have a detrimental effect on the speed of the lens, however the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II makes available f-stops only 1.5 stops slower.

Stacking Teleconverters   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Teleconverters have always been a mystery to me when I first started photography.
The answer I always get is that with a 1.4x teleconverter, the lens lose one stop of light and becomes 1.4 times longer.
After stacking multiple teleconverters with my Canon 300mm f/4 L lens, I have noticed that ordering of the teleconverter makes a difference on the sharpness of the image.

Stacking Jessop 2x Teleconverters on a Canon EOS 300D
Incidentally, this is why they make 1.4x teleconverters, as 1.4 is approximately the square root of 2 and reduces the maximum aperture by 1 stop.
Using stacked 2x teleconverters clearly reduces the sharpness of the image, but then it is allowing you to get closer to the action.

 Teleconverters for Nikkor SLR Lenses
Teleconverters (sometimes referred to as extenders) effectively increase the focal length of a lens.
Teleconverters accomplish their task through the use of optics to further magnify the object to be photographed.
In general, teleconverters are designed for short (200mm and less) or long (300mm and greater) lenses and can not be switched back and forth.

With the addition of Sigma's APO 1.4 EX teleconverter, the lens has an effective focal length range of 140mm to 420mm and a constant f/5.6 aperture.
With the teleconverter attached, there was a very slight degradation of autofocus performance, as well as a very slight loss of sharpness and contrast, which is expected
The most noticeable effect of the teleconverter (in terms of image quality) was light fall-off in the corners of the frame with the lens wide open at f/5.6, which was substantially reduced by f/8.

 Blow up vs. teleconverter
Professional-grade teleconverters are generally optimized for use with specific lenses; these lens/teleconverter combinations sometimes rival the resolution and contrast of the lens alone.
Changing the focal length of the lens, using a teleconverter, or enlarging a portion of the image give identical perspective provided that object distance and overall magnification are equal in all cases.
If the main subject is the same size in the final image produced with a teleconverter, compared to enlarging the central portion of the negative made without a teleconverter, everything in the final image will have the same perspective.

The front of the teleconverter has no filter thread, so filters and lens-hood cannot be screwed onto the teleconverter.
I think the reason is because the teleconverter does not extend the aperature away from the film plane.
The 1.45x teleconverter extends the field-of-view to that of a 159.5 mm lens.

With the teleconverter can I still use the macro mode and does it allow me to be more distant, for example 3 times more distant and get the same image size as without the teleconverter if I were 3 times closer?
I found the optical quality of this tc brilliant, just that with many birds you are still short in focal length and tend to zoom in on your pc more to view it, therefore the subject can look a bit scatchy compared with a full frame subject as in digiscoping.

It would be nice to have a longer reach for wildlife but between lens weight and vignetting, it isn't practical for hand held G3 use.
As predicted a single filter on the lens adapter before the teleconverter has very little impact on the non-vignetted zoom range.
Of course it is more convenient to use the teleconverter when it lives on its own lens adapter without filters, or closeup elemets.
