Its voice business generated $940 million of Teleglobe's $1.3 billion in revenue last year and represents its biggest growth opportunity, said Serge Fortin, a former Bell Canada employee who was appointed chief operating officer and who will lead the company's day-to-day operations, including the sale of its data operations.

Teleglobe, the Reston, Va.-based backbone provider, today announced restructuring plans after news that its owner and main source of funding, Bell Canada Enterprises, was ceasing long-term funding to the company.
Teleglobe, which as recently as February began calling itself BCE Teleglobe, has received $350 million from BCE since December 2001, but will now only receive "short-term periodic" funding up to a maximum of $125 million.
Teleglobe saw a $16-million reduction in revenue for data services for the first quarter of 2002 compared to that of 2001, as well as a $15 million reduction over the same time period in voice revenue.

Debt-laden Teleglobe announced Wednesday it will cut 850 jobs – almost half of its staff – as the company filed for and was granted bankruptcy protection to give it time to restructure its operations under a new CEO.
