Telegraph | Sport | Hill turns Bristol into the talk of the town
Hill's genius, and a lesson for Quins, was to navigate his way out of the division, avoiding those traps.
Most of Hill's young players, fresh out of school or university and making their way in the sport, are reportedly on contracts worth between £15,000 and £20,000, a pitiful sum by Premiership standards.
Hill's challenge, as he increases his squad from 33 to 45 to cope with the Premiership demands, is to hang on to that sense of identity.

Semaphore Marine Signals of Telegraph Hill
Telegraph Hill received it's name from the semaphore placed on it's summit in 1850 which advised the city of the approach of ships.
It was referred to as the New Marine Telegraph, and as vessels made their way through the Golden Gate a lookout arranged the 2 arms of the semaphore to indicate the type of craft approaching.
The new telegraph expedited ship reporting but completely bypassed Telegraph Hill, and soon people on the streets lost the habit of looking up at the hill to see what ships were arriving.

Telegraph Hill first served as an observation point when John Montgomery built a fort shortly after his arrival in San Francisco in 1846.
Four years later, the Maria Telegraph, for which the hill is named, began to tell the city of approaching sea vessels.

The Telegraph Hill Society was originally founded by local residents as the Telegraph Hill Conservation Society to seek protected Conservation Area status for the Hill.
Developed by the Haberdashers into a residential suburb through the later part of the nineteenth century, the area is the epitome of good Victorian development, still boasting schools, a church and parks all designed and built as an integral part of the neighbourhood.
The name “Telegraph Hill”, derives from an Admiralty semaphore station established on the hill in 1795 and used to convey, amongst other messages, news of Wellington’s victory at Waterloo to the nation.

The famed Telegraph Hill flock of wild parrots may be a familiar sight on slopes of the Greenwich Steps, where Bittner has fed and cared for the cherry- headed conures for a decade.
At the time, Bittner, a caretaker in one of the hill's historic but crumbling cottages, was reading Snyder's works and was struck by something the poet said about the city being "just as natural as the country." It caused him to try bird-watching as a way of exploring that theme.
Five years ago, when Bittner had to leave his rent-free cottage where he'd been a caretaker (his landlords were renovating), he gave up feeding the parrots for a year.

Whether you are heavy into ornithology, or wouldn’t know what ornithology was unless you Googled it, Judy Irving’s touching and poignant documentary “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” is an unexpected pleasure and a fascinating look into a beautiful and rarely seen world.
Bittner was one of the myriad of people who came to San Francisco during the heyday of the hippie movement, looking for a better life than the one he would have had in his hometown.
It is the world, however, who has benefited from her decision to continue shooting, for the story she discovered is more captivating and enchanting than most of the rubbish being passed off as “entertainment” in multiplexes today.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is the story of Mark Bittner, told through his relationship to a flock of wild cherry-headed conures, or cherries.
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is peculiar and slippery, a story of one thing that gracefully evolves into a story about something else.
It's not going to impress anyone with tales of amazing parrot tricks or man's struggle against an unjust society, but it hums with a quiet sadness and joy, and communicates Bittner's Zen philosophy through the details of his unconventional life.

THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL
Filmmaker Judy Irving centers her film around Mark Bittner, a "Bohemian St. Francis" and former street musician who cares for a flock of red-and-green colored parrots outside his temporary home in the hills of San Francisco.
Two small quibbles: The "surprise" ending is natural enough, but it blunts the impact of the heart-tugging news about Connor's death and Bittner's sorrowful eviction (it also raises questions about the true relationship between the filmmaker and her subject); and Chris Michie's original music score fails to add much to the piece.
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill probably won't convert hardened industrialists into nature lovers; it also may not please environmentalists (the one passing reference to them in the film is unflattering).
