Teleostomi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The teleostomi are jawed vertebrates that include all jawed vertebrates except the chondrichthyes, and the placoderms.
The distant ancestor of teleostomes that lived in sea of Latest Ordovician, whatever it was, its autapomorphies were enough to eventually out-compete every other vertebrate group.
The Acanthodii were successful teleostomes, but they went extinct by Permian Period, leaving the Teleostomi's daughter clade, Osteichthyes, to remain the dominant clade and continued to evolve.

The Devonian is frequently called, with ample reason, the "Age of Fishes." The stage for this explosion of aquatic vertebrates was undoubtedly set in the Silurian, perhaps due to the duplication of ancestral hox genes.
The recent discovery of the Guildayichthyiforms adds substantial clarity to the picture and may change our idea of the Actinopterygii considerably.

Preliminary examination of the growth of mpasa, Opsaridium microlepis (Günther, 1864) (Teleostomi: Cyprinidae), younger than one year old, collected from Lake Malawi.
Daily growth increments in the lapillus of the otoliths of one-year-old mpasa, Opsaridium microlepis, were investigated to estimate the early growth and breeding period.
This growth pattern illustrates that mpasa could reach 20 cm total length within a year of hatching.

 Re: Gnathostome phylogeny (Paleo Find)
However, I think that the teleostomi group (3+4+5) is probably in deep trouble, and Teleostomi would become a synonym of Gnathostomata if Acanthodea are indeed the most primitive of the five classes (as some recent evidence indicates):
I just hope that someone hasn't cladistically anchored Gnathostomata on the placoderms (and not on acanthodeans as well), since that could leave chondrichthyeans and acanthodeans outside of a cladistic Gnathostomata.
And if they have anchored Teleostomi on acanthodians, it might well become a heterodefinitional synonym of Gnathostomata.
