Harmala alkaloid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Harmala alkaloid "Harmine", also known as Telepathine and Banisterine, is a naturally occurring beta-carboline alkaloid that is structurally related to harmaline.
Telepathine was originally thought to be the active chemical constituent of Banisteriopsis caapi, a key plant ingredient in the preparation of Ayahuasca; a sacremental beverage from the Amazon.
This isolated chemical was so named because of the reported effects of Ayahuasca among the indigenous users, including: collective contact with and/or visions of jaguars, snakes, and jeweled birds, and ancestral spirits; the ability to see future events; and as the name suggests, telepathic communication among tribal members.

Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - Harmala
In Caapi, it is used in combination with a DMT containing admixture to form a South American Entheogen known as Ayahuasca; in high enough doses, it is slightly hallucinogenic on its own.
Telepathine was originally thought to be the active chemical constituent of Ayahuasca which gave Native users from the Amazon jungle collective contact with and/or visions of jaguars, snakes, and jeweled birds -- not to mention dead ancestors, the ability to see future events, and as the name suggested, telepathic communication among tribal members.
It was assumed to be a newly discovered chemical, the active compound of Banisteriopsis caapi; however, it was discovered that Telepathine was already known more widely as Harmine.

Toxicologists were fascinated by the drug and soon extracted the active compound from the Banisteriopsis vine, naming it Telepathine.
However, in the nineteen thirties, research interest in ethnopharmacology faded and the matter was left to rest.
The case on ayahuasca was reopened in 1957 when researchers discovered that Telepathine was actually Harmine, one of several compounds from the beta-carboline family of hallucinogens.

Harmine, once called telepathine because it was believed to cause shared hallucinations, is well known for causing visions of panthers, leopards, and other large cats.
This curious property has been attested to by dozens of reporters, both native and presumably immune white ethno-botanists, who consistently describe hallucinatory adventures with big cats.

Pharmacologists have found that the two primary active ingredients in yage are harmine and harmaline, which were isolated earlier this century from Syrian Rue, peganum harmala.
Harmaline is a mild hallucinogen that some researchers in the 60s thought actually contributed to psychic abilities, which is why in some labs it was referred to as 'telepathine.'
However, the vine is almost never taken alone; in almost every traditional preparation a tea is made by boiling the vine, and other ingredients are added to that tea.

But some hypnotists in the 19th century reported that their patients, when asked to invent certain stories from whole cloth, inevitably ended up borrowing material from the doctor's own mind, without any prompting.
Scientists who worked with the hypnotoform trance-inducing drug called ayahuasca used to refer to it as "telepathine" because it was believed that the state created by the drug heightened ESP. (Dobkin de Rios 1992: 152) There are some trance phenomena in various religions which almost seem to demand paranormal explanations.
