Teletext - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Teletext was first demonstrated in the USA in 1978 by American television network CBS, which decided to try both the British Ceefax and French Antiope software for preliminary tryouts for a teletext service using station KMOX (now KMOV) in St.
Teletext services in the USA like Electra could be received with one of these sets, but these were mostly more expensive higher-end sets offered by Zenith, posibly causing Electra (and American teletext in general) to never catch on with the public.
Television stations which are known to transmit teletext in Level 2.5 include the Dutch public television (background colour on all pages, and a test page with hi-res graphics) and the German ZDF (completely backwards-compatible Level 2.5 teletext, with higher quality text and graphics on nearly all pages).

Teletext is transmitted as a series of 45-byte packets, one per TV scan line.
It is possible for every line of the TV signal to carry Teletext, but to avoid the appearance of snow on a video picture, the lines used are limited to those that are not visible because they occur during the TV vertical blanking interval (lines 6 to 22 and 318 to 335).
The remaining 32 bytes of the packet are not hammed and carry the teletext header line, including the clock.

 philwilson.org: Capturing teletext
One of my daily habits is reading GameCentral (Channel 4, Teletext, pages 375-379) every day.
Except that at the moment my telly reception, despite being cable, is so poor that I only actually get to read pages 375 and 376; for the rest I'm lucky if I get half a frame out of six.
Being able to save out teletext pages would be immensely useful, and it kind of baffles me that I've had so much trouble trying to do it (especially now that teletext doesn't even have a website at all any more).
