Teletypewriter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Two teletypewriters were connected in series at each end of the line, so that the same current passed through both, and the line was normally held in a marking state.
A typical teletypewriter circuit had a current of about 60 mA, and was supplied by 110 VDC sources.
Teletypewriters could be connected in a normal ground-return circuit between the center taps at the two ends.

It is now possible to use teletypewriters, formerly restricted to specialized fields, in either the home or the office after the manner of a telephone.
Teletypewriters transmit typewritten messages electrically so that whatever is typed at one end of the circuit is typed simultaneously at the distant end.
The hub of the teletypewriter service, recently inaugurated by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, is the familiar switchboard operator, who, however, has a typewriter before her instead of a telephone set.

System for controlling polarity state of start-stop telegraph signal train - Patent 4045614   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Accordingly, since the input Teletype signal train applied to the teletypewriter is compulsorily reversed, the polarity of the signal train is restored to the correct polarity state and consecutive erroneous letters can be prevented from being printed by the teletypewriter.
The values of N and M are selected optimum in consideration of the element error rate in the transmission line and the probability of the polarity reversal of the signal train due to the phase ambiguity of the input PSK wave in the demodulator on the receiving side.
The repetition cycles of the clock pulses and the number of stages of the register 8-1 are determined so that each of the pulses k.sub.1 and k.sub.2 are successively delayed by a period of a predetermined number of characters from the pulse (j) or the first pulse k.sub.1.

 teletypewriter - a Whatis.com definition
A teletypewriter (TTY) is an input device that allows alphanumeric character to be typed in and sent, usually one at a time as they are typed, to a computer or a printer.
The Teletype Corporation developed the teletypewriter, which was an early interface to computers.
Basically, this is a one-character-at-a-time mode of sending, receiving, or handling data, although it is often modified to handle a line of characters at a time.

The success of the modern teletypewriter began with Howard L. Krum's conception of the start-stop method of synchronization for permutation code telegraph systems.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief historical account of events which led to that achievement and of those which ensued.
The 10-A teletypewriter was the first embodiment of such basic design features of the 15-Type printer as stationary platen, moving type basket, and selector vane assembly, but the majority of improvements incorporated in the 15-Type were proprietary to the Teletype Corporation.

Telegraph circuits permitted customers to send to each other a printed or hard copy version of the information at reasonable cost, which was impractical with the telephone.
The teletypewriter converted the message to a coded signal which was sent out on the local loop to the STC and central office equipment.
There the signal was converted to make it compatible with the carrier's lines and sent on to the STC serving the distant city.

In another place, the classic mechanical, Baudot-code teletypewriter is described.
The emulator could send to a mechanical teletypewriter, or receive from one, if this is desired, but the main reason for considering this exercise is that it involves a lot of interesting and instructive lore about commonly-found devices, such as keyboards and printers, and confronts the problems of code translation and interface handshaking as well.
The received code from the UART must be translated back into ASCII, and sent to the printer, each character followed by flushing the buffer, unless it is satisfactory to wait for a CR before a line is printed.
