The Ident Protocol is designed to work as a server daemon, on a user's computer, where it receives requests to a specified port, generally 113.
Ident is considered useful due to the fact that it is able to distinguish the name of the person most likely to make a connection to the requesting server, which can then be used as identification for abuse control and/or general reporting purposes.
Ident is important on IRC as a large number of people connect to IRC servers via bouncers which either serve multiple users or are hosted on shared servers.

With a tweak to the Central jingle that accompanied its idents since 1982, the new logo was revealed from the side, as coloured balls splashed onto the crescent segments of the logo.
One ident, transmitted in October 1989, combined the ITV generic ident animation with the Central cake animation on the one screen.
Central’s cake logo remained intact however, and older idents were rationalised and complemented with a new ident package, with the “cake” logo rendered in a number of textures and colours.

London Weekend Television - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
When Carlton Television took over from Thames in 1993 the times were retained, but since Carlton hired its broadcast facilities from LWT the on-screen handover no longer involved switching between different studios.
However LWT has had a disproportionate effect on post-war British Television, as a number of high-flying media personalities including John Birt, Michael Grade and Greg Dyke were all "LWT Boys".
On 27 October 2002, LWT's famous blue-white-red ribbon ident aired for the last time, following an airing of LWTs 1970s startup sequence at around 5am (However, this was not the real ident or the real startup, it was a reproduction in Macromedia Flash).

Composing music for day to day television work has always posed great challenges to the composer as it is bound by deadline both in terms of duration of the music and in terms of time limit given to a musician for composing it.
In this collection of articles in "The Music of Television" we present the evolution of music in television and the lives of the people who are involved in composing music for television and how things changed over the years.

BBC television idents - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The inclusion of the word "colour" in the station ident could be viewed as a subtle reminder to the vast majority of viewers, still watching in fl and white, to buy a colour tv set and the much more expensive colour television licence which financed the BBC.
All the new idents feature a new circle motif and are diverse in their content: swimming hippos, motorcycle stunt riders, children playing "ring a roses", lit windows, surfers, football players, the moon as well as kites [2].
BBC Parliament is a somewhat unusual channel in that for several years after it was founded the digital terrestrial television platform had insufficient bandwidth to allow the channel to transmit pictures, and it was restricted to sound-only transmissions with a fixed caption.

Influenced by a later version of the original oscilloscope, surrounded by the shape of a television screen, the oscilloscope was encapsulated by a television screen.
By the early 1990s, Ulster Television began to tap further into attracting audiences and advertisers in the Republic of Ireland, a previous uncharted territory, and certainly one which 10 years earlier would have provoked controversy and dissent from the Unionist camp.

London Weekend Television was never averse to dual-branding with 'ITV' but the station appeared to get itchy feet with the corporate look and soon returned its own brand name to star billing with these two powerful computer generated idents which ran for five years.
It seems a shame that such a distinctive and valuable television brand should be consigned to the scrapheap although it looks highly unlikely that it will ever return to our screens.

The ident featured a white screen, from which a 3D man (looking for all the world like Oscar Pierce from the American Academy Awards) emerged, holding a can of film.

Of course, even then they had to be ‘revolutionary’, using pictures of “ordinary Londoners” as part of the idents in order to create the regional identity they were already being accused of not having.
