In 1992, we performed the world's first simultaneous transmission of digital HDTV and analog television from our TV station in Washington, D.C. We later participated in establishing the final technical standard, and we hosted an industry testbed for digital HDTV broadcasting, again at our station in Washington.
Traditional televisions use a 4 by 3 aspect ratio, which means the screens are 4 units wide by 3 units high.
The resulting "Grand Alliance" system was developed, documented as the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) standard, tested, and recommended to the FCC by the end of 1995.

Television special - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A television special is a television program, typically a short film or television movie, which interrupts or temporarily replaces programming normally scheduled for a given time slot.
In the 1960s, multi-part Specials, over several days in a week, or on the same day for several weeks, evolved from this format, though these were more commonly called miniseries.
At the same time, the designation "TV Special" for single-episode dramatized presentations was dropped in favor of Made-for- TV-movie, as a publicity gimmick.

 Special/ Spectacular
Television specials are (usually) one-time only programs presented with great network fanfare and usually combining music, dance, and comedy routines (or "bits") presented in a variety show-type format.
When television was still new, specials were common, in that weekly, ongoing shows were expensive to produce and not yet proven as tools for securing long-term viewer loyalty.
But the TV special entered its greatest and most prolific phase in 1954 when genius programmer Sylvester "Pat" Weaver conceptualized what he called television "spectaculars." These one of a kind, one-night broadcasts were Weaver's attempt to bring new and larger audiences and prestige to the television medium and to his network, NBC.

The special is set in the world of vaudeville, the popular genre of music that dominated popular culture from the end of the 19th century and lasting until the “Roaring ‘20’s.” Vaudeville is believed to have been born at New York’s 14th Street Theatre, which is the reason for the title of this special.
Her fourth television special would be unlike the previous three.

Her first television special (winning five Emmy Awards and the prestigious Peabody Award for Distinguished Achievement in Television), My Name Is Barbra (1965), is a classic and was praised by critics coast to coast.
The third special, The Belle Of 14th Street (aired in 1967), did not have a coinciding album release and until this DVD was unavailable to the public.
Special number four is Barbra's famous free open-air concert that she gave on June 17, 1967, titled A Happening In Central Park (and broadcasted Sept 15, 1968) in front of a crowd (gathered in Central Park's massive Sheep's Meadow) estimated at 150,000 of the "luckiest people in the world"!

DVD Verdict Review - Barbra Streisand: The Television Specials
It must be said that at the time of Barbra's first special, the groundbreaking My Name is Barbra, she was the youngest artist (a mere 23 years old) to receive complete creative control over the final product—and she used this control for all it was worth.
The special opens on a photograph of a 6 or 7 year old Barbra that cross-fades into the current Barbra (who at the time was all of 23 years old).
It definitely is—as a record of television spreading its wings during the early days of the variety show format, as a record of an incredibly young talent at the peak of her abilities, and finally, as a record of timeless songs sung in a particularly masterfully manner.

Christmas television special - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christmas television specials are also where non-animated characters from other media may first cross over into animation; examples include the Peanuts comic strip, the Bloom County comic strip, and the Dr.
In British television, a Christmas special is a one-off episode of a regular television series which may not otherwise be running in the winter or even that year, as in Britain television series tend to run on limited schedules of 6 to 13 episodes rather than year-round.
A Christmas special may or may not have a Christmas theme and often is not even set during the Christmas season but usually runs on Christmas day itself and is often longer than a regular episode of the series.

Barbra Streisand: The Television Specials [DVD] - PopMatters Music Review
She broke out in the early '60s, and her voice and charisma were too huge for many Americans not to love her, but no one knew if she was a pop singer or a musical artist; she was too deep and ambitious for the former and not dangerous or revolutionary enough for the latter.
Streisand had gotten some of her start on television (boffo performances on talk shows, mostly), but before she had her first special she was already an established recording artist and Broadway star.
But it doesn't stop her from busting out a couple of hilarious monologues (including one where she says that Santa Claus is dead and another lengthy one that explains a whole bunch of made-up old-fashioned words just to introduce a two-line made-up folk song), a semi-rockin' version of "Marty the Martian", and "People", natch.

For me, the most enjoyable of the specials are the earliest ones, where her youth, passion and drive are most evident.
As the specials go on, you get to watch Barbra evolve as a performer, from the tender age of 22, when the first special was filmed.
Reading the booklet and watching these awe-inspiring specials made me sad that talents like this (assuming they're out there) are rarely showcased as well as they used to be by television (which has surely grown into mass media).

 The Looney Tunes Television Specials
Consisting of entirely new animation, this rather stylish prime-time television special was deliberately cast in the successful mold of Jones' popular musical cartoons, "Baton Bunny" and "Long-Haired Hare", and combined the familiar showbiz rivalry between Bugs and Daffy Duck with Ogden Nash poetry.
Several of the specials are watchable as showcases for the vintage cartoons, and it is fun to think about how thematically similar cartoon shorts could be packaged and to ponder on why certain films were used and others were not, in the assembling of these specials.
Although the cartoons for these specials were cut in some cases by half and assembled into a larger story, the narration seemed to piece them together coherently, and the different settings did not present a problem.

Bob Hope Specials : Bob Hope TV Shows : Bob Hope
Hope began his monthly and semi-monthly television specials in 1950 when he was still the number-one box office draw in the land, starring in a long string of Paramount Pictures like Fancy Pants, Monsieur Beaucaire, Caught in the Draft and, of course, the seven classic 'Road' pictures with Bing Crosby.
Bob Hope never wanted a weekly television series, wisely deciding that his brand of humor might get stale presented week after week on the small screen (and the screen was really small back then!).
The second Hope special six weeks later had comically sophisticated Beatrice Lillie returning (she won rave reviews for the first one and appeared on many of the early Hope specials) with special guests Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee.
