 Journal of Pharmacy & Bioresources - Vol. 2, No. 1 (2005)
The hypoglycaemic activity of the ethanolic extract of leaf of Telfairia occidentalis was evaluated in normoglycaemic and alloxan—induced diabetic rats.
The extract produced significant reduction in blood glucose level at 2 hrs in normoglycaemic rats, and at 2 and 4hrs in diabetic rats after a single oral dose of 250mg/kg.
The reduction in blood glucose level produced by the sub-acute administration of extract on the 5th, 10th and 15th day were comparable to that of glibenclamide. These results suggest that the leaves of Telfairia occidentalis possess hypoglycemic activity in normoglycemic and alloxan-induced diabetic rats and this could be beneficial in the ethnotherapy of diabetes mellitus.

The research activity, jointly conducted by the National Agricultural Institute of Benin, the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Benin and IPGRI, aims to study cultural practices, genetic diversity, use and marketing of the egusi crops Citrullus spp., Cucumeropsis spp.
A total of 63 accessions belonging to Citrullus lanatus, Lagenaria spp., Cucumeropsis edulis and Telfairia occidentalis were screened and first results showed a wide range of variation between and within Lagenaria varieties, especially in the useful traits of fruit shape, colour and size.
This wider knowledge of these little-studied crops is being used in developing new varieties that will increase production levels in the region.
