Telkom has a monopoly on both handling international connections to and from South Africa on the SAT3 and SAFE backbone lines, which account for the majority of international bandwidth in the Republic, and fixed-line communications over public roads.
Telkom was managed by US-based SBC Communications from 1997 to 2004.
Telkom is currently under much fire from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), who accused it of excessive ADSL line charges.

Telkom School of Engineering (or STT Telkom) was established on September 28, 1990, by Telkom Education Foundation (YPT), a foundation owned by Telkom as the biggest state-owned telecommunication company in Indonesia.

Telkom said yesterday it was offering "voluntary severance packages" to about 1 700 employees countrywide who are in positions identified as duplicated or redundant.
He said though the union was aware of the Telkom move, it believed the "voluntary process" would culminate in forced retrenchments.
Telkom said the process was "purely voluntary, and is underpinned by an extensive social plan designed to assist staff to start their own small businesses, retire in financial security or prepare for alternative employment".

 IOL: Telkom accused of 'creating poverty'
Three Telkom unions accused the telephone monopoly on Tuesday of undermining the government's mandate to create jobs and fight poverty by threatening to retrench workers and charging excessive call rates.
Roodt postulated that if Telkom increased its rates by the world average, instead of much more than that, interest rates as well as inflation would have been one percent lower than they were today.
Telkom said it noted "with interest the suggestion in the report that the company should further reduce its labour expenses by about R1,2-billion".

Telkom has warned businesses to be on the alert after uncovering a potentially devastating multi-million-rand scam aimed at ripping off South African banks and government organisations.
The scam, in which letters on Telkom letterheads were sent to a number of large private and public organisations advising them of a "new account" in which to deposit their payments to Telkom, could have seen millions end up in the hands of the syndicate behind the plot.
Telkom spokesperson Xolisa Vapi said the fraudulent letters claimed the business's banking details would be changed as of November 11, 2002.

 Microsoft "Buys" Telkom, says Novell
National telecoms provider Telkom announced yesterday that it is to replace its existing Novell system with the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system, leading to charges by Novell SA's MD that Microsoft is willing to "buy business" in a desperate bid to gain credibility for its Windows 2000 operating system.
According to Telkom's Managing Executive of IT, Jyoti Desai, her company will be negotiating a three-year committal contract with Microsoft, with the option to extend the contract for two subsequent years at the same cost.
Telkom has not yet responded to allegations that operating system efficiency will be compromised under this new initiative in order to achieve lower costs.
