The Two Trees   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Telperion and Laurelin was kindled by Yavanna and Nienna upon Ezellohar in Valinor in Aman in the Valian year 3500.
Telperion was the elder of the two trees and came first to full stature and to bloom while Laurelin was the youngest.
The dew from Telperion and the rain from Laurelin there was spilled on the ground endured long and it was taken into the air and the earth and enriched it with its light and Varda hoarded great wats of it like shining lakes.

Two Trees of Valinor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Telperion had dark leaves (silver on one side) and his silvery dew was collected as a source of water and of light.
However the true light of the Trees, before their poisoning by Ungoliant, was said to now reside only in the Silmarils.
In the Second and Third Ages, the White Trees of Númenor and of Gondor, whose likeness descends from that of Telperion, have a mostly symbolic significance.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Telperion
Telperion endured throughout the Years of the Trees, but came to an end in the dreadful event known as the Darkening of Valinor.
More importantly, one of Telperion's flowers survived the Darkening, and was set aloft by the Valar; this was the light we call the Moon.
Curiously, though Telperion is a Quenya name, the word telpë, 'silver', is an element from the Telerin language.

First there was the two trees in Valinor Telperion (the silver tree) and Laurelin (the golden tree), of these Yavanna made an image (a living tree but not giving lights of it own) for the Eldar in Tirion and that was named Galathilion.
Galathilion was, according to the Quenta Silmarillion, the Noldorin name of Telperion and not of an image of it.
In the revision of the Quenta Silmarillion it is said the name Galathilion was a name of Telperion but it was also given to an image made for the Noldor but now with the attachment -the Less.

When she takes the form of a woman, she is tall and robed in green, but sometimes she takes other shapes.
She sang for a long time until two shoots sprang up from the mound of earth before her, Telperion being the Elder and Laurelin the Younger.
Telperion had leaves of silver and gave off a silver light, while Laurelin had leaves of gold, and gave off a light of gold and radiant heat.

Tilion was a hunter who loved the bow and the silver light of Telperion, and he begged to be allowed to tend to the last silver fruit forever.
As Telperion had been the first to wax and grow, so Isil was first made ready and put into the heavens, and Middle-earth was bathed in moonlight for a time.
The sun and moon are only lesser shadows of the previous radiance of Telperion and Laurelin, but they served to light up the world and give light to Middle-earth where before darkness and starlight reigned, making it much more difficult for Melkor to spread his evil purpose.

Laurelin, likewise, first has an hour of waxing while Telperion wanes, and then shines at its full for six hours until its hour of waning mingles with the hour of Telperion's rekindling.
