The Telstar Story   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Even today "Telstar" remains a happy, feelgood tune and – like the similar contemporary electric sound of The Shadows - captures the mood of the era when people thought that the World was just getting better all the time with the march of technological progress.
Telstar, though, was the true ancestor of modern communication satellites and was also the first space vehicle to be owned by a company rather than a government - in this case AT andT of America - although it was operated by a consortium including NASA and the British General Post Office.
Telstar would be visible from Britain for 40 minutes and then invisible again for the next two and a half hours – an awkward phenomenon if a televised sporting event went into extra time.

Among those who are sitting glued to their TV sets is a British music producer named Joe Meek.
Despite the tragic ending, Meek's stature as a producer and songwriter continues; in particular, his contributions to the recording process-pioneering experiments in compression and close-miking-are belatedly been recognized by his peers.
A whole new generation of listeners pick up on the quirky, atmospheric quality of the "Meeksville Sound." Almost four decades after its release, "Telstar" is still one of the finest examples of instrumental rock ever created, evoking that brief moment in time when a telecommunications satellite could inspire a stirring anthem to the space-age.

Telstar itself went dead less than a year after launch; but “Telstar” was a sort of satellite too, opening channels back to America and rising up that country’s charts while its namesake beamed live into British living rooms.
Over 40 years on, Telstar still stops me when ever I hear it, as then just a teenager, it sparkled to me with such promise, which as has been said, never materialised.

 American Music In Laser Light
ABOUT THE MUSIC: “Carolina Shout” is a fine example of the style of music known as “stride” piano playing, in which the pianist’s left hand “strides” back and forth between bass notes near the low end of the keyboard and chords in the middle of the keyboard, while the right hand plays the melody.
This kind of light effect is well suited to the driving beat of rock and roll music, and the many of the earliest laser shows were composed entirely of rock and roll or rock music.
Howard Hanson (1896-1961) was the director of the Eastman School of Music from 1924 to 1964.

It was up to his associates with more conventional musical talent--David Adams, Geoff Goddard, arranger Charles Blackwell, and future heavy-metal icon Ritchie Blackmore--to translate Joe's caterwauling into structured, AABA hit material.

first telecommunications satellite, British music producer Joe Meek wrote this ode to the new frontier and got the popular instrumental band The Tornadoes to record it.
Propelled by the chunky sound of a valve-driven organ called a clavioline, “Telstar” became an international hit, and was the first #1 pop song ever by a British band on the US music charts.
Because of the guitars, silly; if The Tornadoes captured the immediacy of the historic event, it was The Ventures that explored the future in a shimmering six-string style.

Instrumental Diamonds ' 58 - 77 is Volume 3 in a series of a little known (on these shores) British genre of instrumental music, which had it's heyday and peaked around 1963 with the release of The Tornados #1 smash hit Telstar.
In addition to The Tornados, I had previously heard Sounds Orchestral and The Flee-Rekkers (another Joe Meek production) and had been searching for music by Timebox (in fact just last weekend!), so I was excited to hear this compilation.
Even though Telstar is a sprawling collection which might have too much music for the casual browser, I think the price negates any negativeness stemming from the inclusion of some inferior material or music not in my taste.
