SF REVIEWS.NET: His Majesty's Dragon (aka Temeraire) / Naomi Novik
Temeraire would be enlisted in the Aerial Corps, and, in classic tradition, the rivalry between different branches of the armed forces is strong.
Furthermore, as Temeraire's captain, Laurence will have to leave his naval career (already strongly disapproved of by his family), and enter the ranks of the Corps himself, whose members have nothing like a normal life: no prospects of marriage or family or high status.
Temeraire is a wonderful creation, full of the exuberance of his youth, eager to learn about his world, while Laurence instills in him concepts like duty and responsibility.

The Fighting Temeraire by J.M.W.Turner artist painter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Thus we know from contemporary newspaper reports that the Temeraire was towed by two tugs, and another observer of the towing later testified that the painter invented the spectacular sunset.
The Temeraire glorified for the last time by Turner's brushes, for in reality she is stripped of her masts, sail and rigging, all guns and useful parts are removed by the Admiralty as spares.
Turner first painted this ship of the line in 1808 in his picture The Battle of Trafalgar where he described her as to be seen over the shattered stern of the French ship Redoutable, Admiral Harvey engaged with the Fogieux, and part of the French line.

Review - Temeraire by Naomi Novik
Temeraire’s lineage is unknown but it is known that the Chinese Dragon breeders value intelligence over weapon-like attributes, and this becomes obvious when Temeraire and Laurence spend time together reading books on all sorts of subjects.
Once Laurence and Temeraire arrive at the Training place in Scotland, he enters a new and different society, with people who feel that it is improper that he should have come by Temeraire without any training or experience.
It is a difficult time for Laurence and Temeraire who find it hard to settle to flying drills and tests after their previous freedoms at sea.

Turner's The Fighting Temeraire - Icons of England
As other observers confirmed at the time, the symbolic sunset behind the Temeraire was a product of Turner’s imagination, as were the ship’s masts, rigging and guns, which would have been removed before she made her final journey.
This famous painting by Turner of the Temeraire in her final days being towed off to scrap is a true icon.
The Temeraire rescued HMS Victory and wrough revenge on the French ship Redoutable from where the fatal shot came that killed Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Temeraire is delighted to discover that they have their own dragon language and tell each other dragon folk tales around the campfire at night.
The reason Temeraire’s crew is speculating about the American colonies above is that the Corps has promised a wing of dragons to the Prussian army, and they have not turned up.
Of course Temeraire is not to be so disciplined, and adds a few flourishes of his own to the maneuvers.

 Dragons, Dragons, Dragons
With Temeraire, the first of a trilogy, Naomi Novik moves the tradition in an interesting new direction, although perhaps not as far as one would like it to go.
Temeraire, which is titled after the dragon who is the center of the story, is a fantasy set during the Napoleonic Wars in an alternate reality where dragons not only exist, but have been co-opted to use in the military.
This is a fasinating era, which Novik has successfully captured: the book is full of nifty little technical details, from the initial naval battle to the composition of the dragon crews and the rivalry between the different branches of the military.

When Temeraire bonds with the captain, the two leave the navy to sign on with His Majesty's sadly understaffed Aerial Corps, which takes on the French in sprawling, detailed battles that Novik renders with admirable attention to 19th-century military tactics.
Temeraire, the dragon whose egg is discovered in the early pages of chapter one, is a compelling protagonist -- as is Will Laurence, the Naval captain who becomes responsible for him and who sacrifices his naval career to join the mysterious Air Force.
The relationship that develops between Temeraire and Laurence is very well done; it is believable and shows the reluctance that Laurence feels for having his life plans thwarted.

Peter Jackson: Lord of the Dragons - Sep 13, 2006 - E! Online News
The story of Temeraire centers on British naval Captain Will Laurence who, after capturing a French vessel, discovers an unhatched dragon egg in the hold that was intended as a gift from the emperor of China to Napoleon.
"Temeraire is a terrific meld of two genres that I particularly love--fantasy and historical epic," Jackson tells the Reporter.
Aside from Temeraire, which has yet to have a firm start date, Jackson has been working with his companion, Fran Walsh, and their writing partner, Phillipa Boyens, on a feature adaptation of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones due out next year.

naominovik: Temeraire: Feast or Famine; also, a bunch of questions answered
The third is individual; Temeraire's name is Xiang, meaning auspicious (I am not sure this is the actual character I worked from initially, though -- it seems the closest one I could find on zhongwen.com).
I am also guessing that the dragons of Temeraire's world must be "cold blooded" ectotherms, considering how relatively little they actually eat for such enormous animals, and also from their love of warm surfaces as we see both in the heated Chinese pavillions and the hot springs vents at Loch Laggan.
I could imagine if Temeraire was warm blooded, he would probably require something like 20 cows a day to stay alive, instead of around two or three, and the logistics of maintaining a sizable aerial corps of "medium and heavyweight" warm blooded dragons would be beyond the means of any 19th century nation.

Emerald City: Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Reviews - #128
This may be why Naomi Novik decided use book two of her Temeraire series to resolve the Chinese problem immediately, rather than have it hanging over Temeraire and Laurence until Napoleon had been dealt with.
Temeraire, of course, refuses to go anywhere without Laurence, so the two of them end up on a transport ship taking the long journey by sea to the Far East.
I liked the way she kept Temeraire and Nelson apart in the first book, but the arrival of the Chinese delegation seems to be a little too high-powered to be left to Admiralty flunkies as Novik portrays it.

A little later a third ship [HMS Temeraire] came up and stationed herself astern of the Redoubtable and fired into us at pistol range; in less than half an hour our ship was so riddled that she seemed to be no more than a mass of wreckage.
It is said that the Temeraire was in fact pulled by two tugs, not one, and there was no sunset according to observers on the day.

Temeraire Wood is being hosted by the Manor of Cadland in Hampshire.  This site overlooks the Solent near the entrance of the Beaulieu river, where three of the ships at the battle were constructed (Agamemnon, Swiftsure and Euryalus).
There is no public access to the wood, but the plan is that the Year 2 pupils from both schools will have a Trafalgar picnic in October each year, so that they can report on how the wood is doing, and learn again about Nelson and the Battle.
HMS Temeraire was built in Chatham Dockyard and launched in 1798.  As a first rate of three decks she carried 98 guns, and was a powerfull addition to the Channel Fleet which she joined on her first commission.  In 1803, Captain Harvey took command.

His Majesty's Dragon: Temeraire, Book 1 -- book review
This first book in the Temeraire series begins at a time when the British are struggling to contain the growing threat of Bonaparte’s ambitious war.
Their formidable Navy is stretched thin trying to prevent Napoleon’s forces from crossing the English Channel, while their aerial fleet cannot begin to compete with the formidable fleet of dragons and airmen that the French are rightly proud of.
As Temeraire grows both in size and intellect and becomes family instead of burden, Laurence begins to find the loss of his dreams quite tolerable.

Communion: The Fighting "Temeraire" by J.M.W. Turner
The Temeraire sailed between the enemy forces and Nelson’s ship and absorbed the brunt of the French cannon fire, while Nelson was protected.
The sunset evokes the nostalgia of the end of the day – the end of the Temeraire – and the end of sailing ships altogether, which were being replaced by machines like the ugly, fl, smoke-belching tug that tows the Temeraire.
It’s a scene that heralds the exchange of an age of grace, beauty, and mystery, for the unproven promises of fire and smoke, machines, and technology.

A historical fantasy with bite, this deliciously addictive debut novel from Naomi Novik captures the Napoleonic period perfectly and skillfully layers history with imagination by adding a Dragon Air Force to the battle for England.
Temeraire is a Celestial dragon, the most highly-prized of all draconic breeds; famed for their intelligence, agility and most of all for the Divine Wind - their terrible roar capable of shattering the heavy timbers of war ships and devastating woodland.
Captured by the British, Temeraire was meant to be the companion of the Emperor Napoleon and not captained by a mere officer in the British Air Corps.

The SF Site Featured Review: Temeraire / His Majesty's Dragon
There is something of Jane Austen and Patrick O'Brian and the early beloved Anne McCaffrey in here, and yet as many comparisons as come to mind fall away as quickly as they arise because this book is none of those things, and all of them, and a wholly original entity unto itself.
I confess to probably being a little unable to fully visualise Novik's vision of dragons in battle -- the concept of a single dragon carrying a crew of gunners and a first lieutenant and a ground crew in a gondola dangling from the dragon's belly.
Anything Temeraire does is okay by me. I won't really go into any details here because I honestly don't want to spoil anyone's reading experience where this book is concerned.
