Solera wrote what may be termed the 'patriotic' operas for Verdi - as opposed to Piave, another early collaborator, who dealt with the 'personal' dramas.
Apart from 'adjusting' the draft by Antonio Piazza for Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio, Solera's pen yielded Nabucco, I Lombardi, Giovanna d'Arco and a large part of Attila.
Political intrigues made him flee Madrid after 10 years, and the list of subsequent occupations is as colourful as Solera's own personality: he was rumoured to be a spy in the services of both Napoleon III and Cavour; he reorganised the Egyptian police force for the Khedive of Egypt, and worked as a water carrier.

When the librettist, Temistocle Solera, wrote the line of verse “Va’, pensiero, sull’ali dorate”, he certainly did not imagine the glorious future destiny had in store for those words.
Solera (1815-78) was not a man with lofty ideals, but an adventurous and unreliable character.
Solera’s decasyllables contain one of the most powerfully emotional ingredients of poetry and song: the exile theme, which leads to elegiac emotions such as nostalgia and to strong feelings such as irredentism.

In the meantime, Solera had all manner of colorful adventures, including a trip to Egypt, where he was head honcho for the gala opening of -- you guessed it -- the Suez Canal.
Solera also continued to write prose, as a comparison of the libretto for Nabucco and the story of Aida makes very clear.
Solera knew that Aida would be a perfect libretto for Verdi's next project.

Most commentators blame the librettist, Temistocle Solera, for the work's faults, but that is a little unfair.
This is the sort of opera in which the heroine dies in the last act, is brought back in a vision for her final number, then dies again.
Yes, Temistocle Solera wrote that scene, but Verdi accepted it and apparently liked it enough to defend it.

Here is the Bible, you already have the words, beautiful and written there!" Solera, who had an impetuous character, took this badly; a fire of rage burned in his eyes.
I had an ugly moment then, for the poet was a large man who could quickly have done away with that obstinate composer; but after a moment he sat down at the writing table; and fifteen minutes later the Prophecy was written.
Solera's libretto has many defects: coincidences are too abundant, the actions of the characters are usually too sudden, and their motives are often unintelligible.

Part I, for example, begins with a huge choral movement in which the Jews bewail the desecration of their land by Nabucco, and are exhorted by their high priest to remain true to the faith.
The preoccupation with nationhood in Solera's text is matched in Verdi's music by the emphasis laid on the chorus which, whether in lament, denunciation or worship, represents the whole national and religious community.
The general rejoicing is interrupted by the arrival of Abigaille, who in her remorse has taken poison and presently dies, calling on God, as she does so, for forgiveness.

Nabucco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nabucco is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the biblical story and the play by Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornu.
Given that proceeds from the first and subsequent productions of his first opera Oberto would not last him forever, Verdi was unsure how to continue making a living in Milan.
Bartolomeo Merelli, the impresario of the Teatro alla Scala, approached Verdi with a new manuscript titled Nabucodonosor (later Nabucco) by Temistocle Solera (the librettist of his first opera) which was based on a play of the same name written by Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornu.

His fame as a librettist was affirmed only when he started working in collaboration with Giuseppe Verdi, who was at the start of his long career.
Solera gave Verdi the librettos for Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio (1839), Nabucco (1842), Giovanna d'Arco (1845) and Attila (1840).

As he later recalled, however, he was inspired by the Temistocle Solera libretto which had been turned down by the Viennese composer Otto Nicolai, particularly the verses for the great chorus of the Hebrew captives, "Va, pensiero." Nabucco was a hit from the moment it premiered.
Samson was one of a series of judges whom God appointed when the Israelites backslid into sin or idolatry, or when faced with trouble from their local enemies between the time they occupied the Promised Land and the installation of the monarchy.
Instead Solera eliminated the character of Daniel entirely, opened with a simplified conquest of Jerusalem and destruction of the Temple, and then fictionalized some events around twelve verses in Chapter 4, the madness of Nebuchadnezzar--Nabucco.

Review/Opera; Blood and Thunder From the Young Verdi - New York Times
Written with the librettist Temistocle Solera in less than a year, it was meant to follow the triumph of the collaborators' "Nabucco" with another public, political drama, including a nationalist chorus ("O Signore, dal tetto natio") that was intended to have the same stirring impact of "Va, pensiero" in "Nabucco." It nearly succeeded.
At the opera's premiere at La Scala in 1843, "I Lombardi" tapped into passions for Italian unification, and it soon found a similar response in other countries with its tale of national purpose, bloodily accomplished.

Speaking with heaven or in league with the devil - Verdi's Giovanna D'Arco presents a dilemma with a tragic outcome.
For this work, Verdi's colleague Solera wrote what is generally thought of as a really silly opera libretto, drawing loose reference to Schiller's play Die Jungfrau, which was not so much interested in historical accuracy as poetic truth.
Solera reduces the plot to a bare minimum, losing all the minor characters and some of the major ones as well.

Four dates mark out the "live history" of Ildegonda, the first opera composed by Emilio Arrieta (1821-1894) to a libretto by Temistocle Solera (1815-1878).
Solera's libretto is a drama conventionally within the great romantic tradition.
Still, it is not devoid of dramatic value; the story is forcefully developed in some effective situations of which Arrieta, with his strong sense of theatre, takes full advantage.

Popularity came with Nabucco (Milan, 1842), to a libretto by Temistocle Solera (1815-1878) who specialized in theatrical effects.
Its unison chorus “Va pensiero”, sung by the exiled Hebrew slaves, was taken later on as expressive of the fate of Italians under Austrian domination.
Francesco Piave (1810-1876), who wrote the words for this, provided ten libretti for Verdi, taking the view, which accorded with Verdi’s, that the words were subservient to the music and to the composer’s demands.
