  Temperature Gauge
One of the members reported a problem with the coolant temperature gauge which moved to it's mid position as soon as the ignition was switched on, even when the engine was completely cold.
This sender only operates the temperature gauge but its analogue output is digitised in the instrument cluster for obd reporting.
One member had reported that when the lights were on the gauge behaved itself - believe it or not that was due to the dash panel bulbs warming the circuit board so that it expands.

Temperature gauge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A temperature gauge is a device used to indicate the temperature of an item being monitored.
The word gauge would seem to exclude a thermometer, which uses the thermal expansion of a liquid, but in the sense that it measures temperature it would seem to qualify.
Common methods of measuring temperature include bimetallic strip (the bending of which increases with temperature) and the thermocouple which produces an electronic voltage that depends on the temperature.

The temperature gauge is a very important indicator in construction and automotive equipment.
Depending on the type of equipment, the gauge may be mechanical, electric, or a warning light.

To be sure the problem is not the gauge, you can momentarily short the pink wire on the output of the sender to ground, and this should show up as FULL on your gauge.
If the gauge does not move from EMPTY either the wiring has an open circuit (no voltage, or no connection to ground) or he gauge is bad.

The temperature gauge is a “mechanical” unit consisting of a bulb with fluid (ether) mounted in engine head, a gauge head mounted in the instrument cluster on the dash, and a tube connecting the bulb to the gauge head.
In this case, the gauge head unit is known to be working properly, the defect is in the tubing and in the loss of fluid from the sealed system.
The gauge head is a Bourdon tube connected to the indicator by a linkage.

This type of temp gauge is less accurate because the readings depend largely on where and on which engine the sensor is mounted.
This gauge is the least expensive by a long shot, so it has been the choice of the vast majority of nitro enthusiasts.
Regularly using a temperature gauge allows you to build a “library” of tuning data that you can refer to; when faced with conditions you’ve tested in, you’ll know which engine temperature range to shoot for.

Since water temperature has a big effect on HP (as shown at the dyno), it's nice to have a working water temperature gauge.
Since the water temperature is so much lower than with the stock radiator, it's possible my old oil cooler setup would keep the oil temperature lower 225° F. But 225° F seems acceptable and certainly I have a simpler setup with fewer oil line fittings.
Transmission temperature stays close to 100° F. The highest I've seen it is 180° F (this was after hours of driving during a road trip).

Building an Intercooler Water Temperature Gauge & Fuel Temperature Gauge
The problem with the first gauge is it uses an electronic control box that would require a new gauge for each item to be measured (two new gauges, one for fuel temp, one for intercooler water temp).
Now that the gauge was in and installed it was time to give it a try for a day or two to see how well it responded.
I contemplated marking the gauge with a sharpie (actually finding someone with better penmanship) to using a p-touch labeler and finally decided to use transparency paper that was inkjet compatible to print the numbers.

Temperature sender mounted in the transmission fluid cooling line just as it exits the transmission.
The probe was originally installed on the air bleeder port where the top radiator hose fitting is. The disadvantage with the probe in the air vent port is that there is a low flow of coolant there until the T-stat opens.
While digging around the toolbox, this valve was found to be a perfect air bleeder valve to replace to temperature probe.

If your temp gauge goes straight to red from a cold start and doesn't go to say something over half way after the first two or three miles and then drop back a fair bit as the thermostat opens to allow the coolant to circulate, then it could still be a jammed thermostat.

THE HERD: LT1/LT4 temperature gauge anomalous readings
It has also been noticed that the PCM indicated engine temperature does not always agree with what the gauge shows, leading many to believe that their instrument cluster temperature gauge is inaccurate or faulty.
The one for the gauge is mounted in the side of one of the cylinder heads, while the PCM sending unit is mounted on the front of the engine directly in the water pump.
In summary, the temperature differential in the Impala gauge vs. PCM sending units is the fault of the location of the gauge sending unit, and not the gauge or sending unit itself.

This means that as the temperature of the engine increases, current flow through the gauge increases and the needle deflects toward H. The temperature-sending unit and gauge in the Magnettes do not operate like this.
First of all, notice that when the ignition of the Magnette is turned off, the temperature gauge reads maximum H. When the ignition is turned on, the gauge swings down to C and then works its way toward H as the engine warms up.
When the ignition is first turned on, current flows through the resistance wire, the switch contacts and the temperature gauge, causing the gauge to move to the C position.
