Tempest (arcade game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The game is a tube shooter, a type of shoot 'em up where the environment is fixed, but is shown from a pseudo three-dimensional perspective.
In each of the first sixteen stages of the game, the player controls the back-and-forth motion of a yellow claw-shaped spaceship at the near end of a geometrically simplified wireframe tunnel or field.
The continue - Tempest was the first to allow players to resume playing on a higher initial level once they had lost all their lives, instead of having to start from the beginning again, a feature that has become standard in later arcade games.

Tempest 2000 for PC video game review and cheats   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
There are three versions of the game included: Tempest Plus, which is most similar to the original Tempest but adds the assistance of artificially intelligent "droids;" Tempest 2000, which in addition to the droids adds numerous extra enemies and game play options; and Tempest Duel, which allows you to play against a human opponent.
This is one case where the claim that it is a "3D arcade action" game really rings true, and one has to move adeptly from corridor to corridor to kill the aggressors before they close in.
The game is best played with a joystick or game pad, as the keyboard is a bit slow and clumsy for a game like this; the mouse is not supported during gameplay because of the diverse nature of the movement required.

 Tempest
After finishing a game of Tempest, the player had a short period of time in which to start a new game.
Arcade game manufacturers soon caught on, designing games that were harder and harder to play, eventually leading to such unplayable monstrosities as Gradius III.
Tempest exists in 3 revisions - rev 1 contained the infamous 'cheat' bug, rev 2 removed it and rev 3 fixed a 'screen-collapsing' bug in 2 player mode.

Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operatos might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up.

Tempest is a bizarre little game to crack.
Since you spend your time rolling around a vaguely tubular structure, the game is controlled with a knob only, and surprisingly, the speed with which you move the control is reflected in your onscreen speed.
Tempest's home-game heyday didn't come until long after the age of such machines as the Atari 2600, although a prototype of an Atari 2600 version of the game was revealed at Classic Gaming Expo 2000.

"Tempest Plus" works best as a training mode for beginners or a cooperative two player game, while "Tempest Duel" is a passable competitive game.
The jewel of the cartridge, however, is "Tempest 2000": As a good sequel should, the expanded enemies and features add new dimensions of strategy without losing the spirit of the original game.
There's no way to directly adjust the game difficulty, though the various modes offer something to players of all skills, and the game grows harder at a gradual pace.

If the game starts acting better with components removed, then look at the chip select lines for those parts for possible shorts (this technique won't work for the first pair of VSM RAM chips, but it will for the other ones, since the test patterns on the whole are less than 1K of vector operations).

I sincerely hope that they haven't made the same mistake in the other versions of the game for the Saturn and Windows, because those are being sold as straight T2K, and the fact that the Particle Laser doesn't nail Spikes properly alters the balance of the gameplay considerably.
Altering the game by "wussifying" elements and then, in the case of the AI droid, getting an extra powerup in there by just restoring things to how they should have been in the first place, strikes me as a bit of a cop-out.
