 | | It was with the deepest sorrow and sense of terrible loss that the RCAF Memorial Museum has recently learned of the passing away of one of its honourary directors and strong supporters, Air Commodore Leonard Birchall (The Saviour of Ceylon) in Kingston, Ontario, on September 10, 2004. |
 | | After the War Birchall served in several significant positions at Headquarters in Ottawa, NATO Headquarters in Europe, as Commanding Officer of Stations Goose Bay and North Bay and as Air Attaché at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. During his tenure as Air Attaché he did significant work on the formation of NATO and NORAD. |
 | | Birchall's conduct during his three and a half years of internment resulted in his being awarded the Order of the British Empire. |
