Temple of Olympian Zeus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Temple of Olympian Zeus, also known as the Olympeion (in Greek Ναός του Ολυμπίου Διός or Naos tou Olimpiou Dios), is an ancient temple, now in ruins, in the centre of Athens.
The temple was excavated in 1889-1896 by Francis Penrose of the British School in Athens (who also played a leading role in the restoration of the Parthenon), in 1922 by the German archaeologist Gabriel Welter and in the 1960s by Greek archaeologists led by Ioannes Travlos.
During the years of Greek democracy, the temple was left unfinished, apparently because the Greeks of the classical period thought it hubristic to build on such a scale.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus, with the Akropolis in the background.
As with almost all ancient Greek temples the building was oriented east-west, though the Old Temple of Athena was unusual in that it did not have a single main cult chamber entered from the east, but rather possessed two sets of cult rooms, one set entered from the east and one from the west.
The construction of the Old Temple of Athena Polias, constructed in the second half of the sixth century, is variously attributed by scholars to Peisistratos and his sons or to the early days of the new Kleisthenic democracy.

 Temple of Zeus at Olympia
The Olympieum, or Temple of Olympian Zeus, served as a focal point for visitors to Olympia, for it housed one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, a 12 meter high gold and ivory statue of the god Zeus, created by the famous sculptor Pheidias.
The temple was built during the Early Classical period, between about 470 BC and 456 BC, by the architect Libon of Elis.
The monumental sculpture was destroyed in a fire, and an earthquake ruined the temple in the 5th century AD; however, Pausanius' careful descriptions have aided us greatly in reconstructing and understanding the architecture from fragments.
