Although Tenochtitlan was considered the center of the Aztec universe, Templo Mayor was the direct center; in many ways it was the axis mundi of the Aztecs.14 Templo Mayor was built on the eastern side of the "Sacred Precinct" of Tenochtitlan, which housed the administrative and spiritual buildings.
