Mathematical tempo markings of this kind became increasingly popular during the first half of the 19th century, after the metronome had been invented, although early metronomes were somewhat unreliable; Beethoven's metronome markings, in particular, are notoriously unreliable.

tempo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The tempo of a piece will typically be written at the start of a piece of sheet music.
Classical musicians also frequently use words to describe the tempo of a piece, sometimes on their own, sometimes with an additional metronome mark.
Sometimes composers (or music publishers) will also use the tempo markings as the title of a piece of music, or of one of the movements, for example Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.

Tempo - Art History Online Reference and Guide
The tempo of a piece will typically be written at the start of a piece of music, and is usually indicated in beats per minute (BPM).
Mathematical tempo markings of this kind became increasingly popular during the first half of the 19th century, after the metronome had been invented.
The association of tempo with genre means that genres can be used to define tempos; thus Ludwig van Beethoven wrote "In tempo d'un Menuetto" over the first movement of his Piano Sonata Op.

1999 Large Variant Contest Voter Comments Page
Chess is sometimes spoiled, sometimes complimented by a middle-of-the-board obstruction, and the Conveyor rests on the spoiled.
I've myself thought of regular chess on a 10x10 board with the outside rows and columns (simply forget the 12x12 board), but I would not have added the momentum aspect, as it is simply too confusing.
I understand that Chess is at least as much a game of complex relations and spheres of influence, as it is a game of pieces on boards, and while this variant does an admirable job of addressing balanced mathematics, it seems to have neglected the more tangible aspects of Chess.

Pawns may suddenly appear on the seventh rank and promote to queen on their next move, checkmates may be accomplished via an overwhelming combination of pieces, etc. A win is accomplished by checkmating first on either board, or by winning on time (one of the opponent's flags falls first).
In this situation the enemy pawn is allowed by chess rules to capture the en passant pawn as if it had only advanced one square, but this may only occur on the opponent's next move.

DP S1998R: Caissa at the Table
In chess, gaining an early advantage in tempi is so valued that entire opening systems have been created around the concept of sacrificing pawns (force) to gain an advantage in tempi (time).
It is true that in chess, pieces have different values, but it is also true that the same piece can be strong or weak, depending on where the piece is placed or the position on the board.
In chess, the overburdened defender is often the object of a sacrifice.

Guardian Unlimited | Life | Chess! What is it good for?
By modifying key variables, such as the number of moves al lowed each turn, or whether one player can see all of the other's pieces, they are investigating the relative importance of a host of factors that translate to the battlefield, such as numerical superiority, a quick advance and the use of stealth.
As well as tempo, planning and strength, they looked at stealth (one agent had pieces invisible to its opponent), and the level of "networking" between an agent's pieces (involving the exchange of information on the "value" of the particular move, if any, that each piece could make).
One important advance from the chess simulations is to allow multiple moves at the same time, as would happen in a battle.

As the story reveals, many military experts--both past and present--believe that a quick tempo is essential to a military victory, so the connection appears to be quite strong, and chess appears to have been immensely valuable in revealing the connection.
Additionally, chess is being used quite successfully in preparing the next generation of wargames to better equip armies for 21st century warfare.
Basic chess teaches a certain set of concepts; change the rules (delay on seeing moves, uncertainty as to enemy pieces) and you change which concepts are important.

 Yasser Seirawan
He considers Classical Chess – three minutes of thinking-time per move – to be too slow, so he has accelerated the time-control towards a Rapid Chess tempo.
The time-control for all phases of the Classical Chess cycle from the Swiss qualifying tournament onwards is 40 moves per player in two hours, followed by 20 moves in one hour, followed by 30 minutes per player for the rest of the game.
The costs of the chess Commissioners’ Office would be borne out of the 5% emergency reserve fund that would also support the staging of the cycles.

 FISCHERANDOM CHESS: Random Position Generator
The initial configuration of the chess pieces is determined randomly for White, and the fl pieces are placed equal and opposite the white pieces.
This assumes that the static chess setup is "average" in terms of the degree to which it gives White an advantage from having the first move.
As these two "alternate chess realities" are played by as great or possibly greater numbers than the western variant, and gameplay is nevertheless quite smooth, it can be a lesser factor than many might think that pawns are unprotected, whether in FRC or in the standard game.

Zugzwang   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In chess, zugzwang (German for "compulsion to move", IPA:) occurs when one player is put at a disadvantage because he or she has to make a move — the player would like to pass and make no move, but the fact that the player must make one means being forced into a weaker position.
Normally in chess, having tempo is a good thing, since the player with the chance to move has greater power by being able to choose the "best" next move.
The zugzwang theme is extensively used in chess compositions and endgame studies.

Elements of Tempo, by Ian Lippert - a Magic: the Gathering article
EDT wrote"Time is for the most part interchangeable with mana." Most players have some concept of what tempo is. When your opponent has three Jackal Pups out on turn 2 and you are still waiting to get that sixth mana to cast your Craw Wurm, your loss is inevitable.
The loss of a tempo, where a player takes two moves to accomplish what can be done in one move (or takes three moves where two moves are enough, etc.), can be sufficient for a decisive advantage.
Whereas early game tempo is more dependant on the casting cost/mana base ratio, late game tempo is determined almost strictly by the player's ability to draw cards.

For this reason Affinity isn't really a 'tempo deck' in the sense that it does very little to create tempo for itself; it just tries to be the fastest it can be and hopes that that is good enough to win.
Tan, correctly, points out that tempo in chess means basically that you undo more than one of your opponent's moves with one of your own, and that in Magic, tempo means stealing one of the turn-limited resources of the game from your opponent.
And the tempo advantage gained by playing a Lord of Tresserhorn instead of (say) a Hill Giant is that you effectively are attacking on Turn 4 with a Turn 9 or 10 creature; similarly, the tempo advantage of a Savage Beating should be easy to understand.
