The current municipality of Temse was formed in 1977 by the merging of the former municipalities of Temse, Steendorp, Tielrode and Elversele.
Temse is the oldest parish of the country of Waas, and was converted to Christianity in 772.
The new flag of Temse is therefore vertically divided blue-yellow, blue and yellow being the colours of the coat of arms of Temse.

The East Flemish town of Temse is the first Belgian municipality to conclude an agreement to show US cruise tourists Flanders.
The news is somewhat surprising because the town is not on the usual tourist trail, is not renowned for its sights and is somewhat of a backwater.
The American tourists are coming to Temse not to visit a church or the local museum, but to experience life in Flanders in a typical Flemish family.

At its mouth into the North Sea at Vlissingen (Flushing), the waters of the Schelde river have flowed nearly 100 km from the last crossing by a bridge at Temse, or on the Rupel branch at Boom.
(Construction began on a tunnel north from Terneuzen in 1999.) The next fixed crossings upstream are at Temse and Boom (over 20 km from the Kennedy tunnel in each case).
