Their in-between album EP, The Sound of a Handshake/This About the City, was an accurate indication of things to come.
It was the album that changed the way I listened to music, and also drastically changed the type of music I listened to.
My only warning is that you may have to listen to this album at least five times to even come close to adequately dissecting it.

This is the second group album (as cLOUDDEAD) for three of the founders of the indie hip-hop collective anticon: Why?, Doseone and Odd Nosdam.

 Big Dada cLOUDDEAD - Ten
The trio whose debut, self-titled album was met with such consternation and acclaim back in 2001 have, after numerous solo projects and a break-up (or two), returned with the follow-up.
“ten” finds cLOUDDEAD building on all of the elements that defined their debut: razor-sharp vocal interplay, quirky found sound samples, ambient drone dreamscapes, lyrics that walk the line between observational and confessional, and a fair share of nosdam’s growl-slow drums.
The period of recording the ten tracks that make it up coincides with why’s and nosdam’s relocation to join Doseone in Oakland and it’s as if the move from Cincinatti to California has opened the group up.

Stylistically, it is of a piece with the first cLOUDDEAD record, although the trio have gone to pains to make this album more cohesive, less wandering than their debut.
If anything, "Ten" is more possessing of an unabashed pop sensibility than anything on Anticon so far, which makes it as good a place as any for the uninitiated to begin.
Unfortunately, his new release, the double-live album "Animal Serenade," tries to cover all of these periods and shows that as hip as Reed may be, his performance levels have dipped over the years.

If in fact this album proves to be the band's last, it offers a wistful glimpse of what might have been.
Elements of Orwellian satire are detectable throughout, but the group's anarchism is fastidiously sublimated, expressed by both formal techniques (as in the baffling use of vocal multitracking) and their words, which seem chosen for their textural qualities.
Productionwise, the album's crowning achievement is "Dead Dogs Two", a hymn in two parts that begins as a grim dirge and ends with an ascendant organ refrain and a flurry of twittering birds.

After the album there was that Peel session – a record of complete and gleeful abstraction, finished off with a perfect pop song in 'Physics Of A Bicycle'.

One of the inherent problems that I've often encountered when reviewing more underground "difficult" albums is that tricky situation when you're losing your battle with the deadline and you still can't rightly decide what you think of it.
The problem though is that this isn't an instrumental album and so we have to concentrate on the lyrics.
In fact it's a testament to the production and songwriting that I felt compelled to keep repeating the album, convinced that it would grow on me. Sadly it didn't, and from different vocal chords this could have been one of the highlights of the year so far.

Three years ago, cLOUDDEAD quietly revolutionised the world of underground hip-hop with a series of EPs and their seminal self-titled album by taking their beats and samples far beyond the realm of the genre.
cLOUDDEAD is melodically delivered poetry over beats with sampled and hand played sounds questionably sequenced into a song that is carefully mixed to insure that the sound that is often referred to as "The cLOUDDEAD Sound" is indeed present.

The not-so-surprising thing about cLOUDDEAD's prog-rap is that it's not very popular among hip-hop fans, who aren't as desperate for pretentious artistic statements as their rock counterparts were in the mid-Seventies.
Besides, the group has more in common with the prog-rockers that are rarely heard on classic rock radio: bands like King Crimson and Soft Machine who, far from their bloated contemporaries, never seemed to worry about being too silly or difficult to sell records.

cLOUDDEAD was a trio of white hip-hop artists from the Oakland-based "Anticon" collective: producer Odd Nosdam (David Madson), and rappers Adam "Doseone" Drucker and Yoni "why?" Wolf.
The sound effects (which constitute the core, not just the periphery, of the music) are even reminiscent of Brian Eno's ambient music and Throbbing Gristle's industrial music.
cLOUDDEAD are closer to Notwist than to El-P. Themselves is a project by Doseone and producer "Jel" that has released Them (2000) and The No Music (2002), which sound like a post-modernist rewriting of the canon of funk and soul music.
