  USS Argonaut
Two submarines of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Argonaut, after a relative of the octopus -- sometimes called the paper nautilus -- which propels itself underwater by expelling a jet of water.
In December, the submarine departed Brisbane under the command of Lieutenant Commander J.R. Pierce to patrol in the hazardous area between New Britain and Bougainville, south of St.
In July 1952, the submarine underwent a major conversion at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, during which she received a snorkel system and a streamlined conning tower.

Submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Military submarines are generally divided into attack submarines, designed to operate against enemy ships, including other submarines, in a hunter-killer role, or strategic ballistic-missile submarines, designed to launch attacks on land-based targets from a position of stealth, also known as "boomers" in the United States Navy or "bombers" in the Royal Navy.
Submarines designed for the purpose of attacking merchant ships or other warships are known as "fast attacks", "hunter-killers", "fast boats", or "fleet submarines" (which terms are not synonyms; each is a different design for a different mission).
Where Japan had the finest submarine torpedoes of the war, the USN had perhaps the worst, the Mark 14 steam torpedo, with a Mk 6 magnetic influence exploder and a Mk 5 contact exploder, neither of which was reliable.

Tench - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tench or doctor fish (Tinca tinca) is a fish of the Cyprinid family, and is one of the commonest and most widely spread freshwater fishes of Europe.
The tench is distinguished by its very small scales, which are deeply imbedded in a thick skin, whose surface is as slippery as that of an eel.
The tench is really an excellent fish for the table, if kept in cool, clear water for a few days, as it is the custom to do in Germany, in order to rid it of the muddy flavour imparted to it by its favorite abode.

 USS Grampus
The fourth USS Grampus (SS-4) was Submarine Torpedo Boat No. 4, whose keel was laid down on 10 December 1900, at San Francisco, California, by Union Iron Works[?], a subcontractor for the John P. Holland Torpedo Boat Company[?] of New York City.
Subsequently assigned to the First Submarine Division, Pacific Torpedo Flotilla, in January 1910, and to the Pacific Fleet in March 1911, the submarine torpedo boat operated locally off the California coast until assigned to the Pacific Reserve Fleet on 28 June 1912.
The seventh USS Grampus (SS-523) was a Tench-class submarine[?].

 History
Naturally, the Balao Class boats became known as the “thick skins”...while the Gato Class and earlier classes were dubbed “thin skins.” In outward appearance and internal layout, the heavy-hull boats were practically identical to the earlier type, and many people, including the Japanese were unaware that there had been any change.
Externally, the boats were practically indistinguishable for Balao Class submarines except for a sharper knuckle at the ball of the stem.
The veteran submarine was decommissioned, struck from the Navy List, and transferred to the Navy of the Republic submarine “Cerbe” and assigned her pennant Number “S-340”.

TENCH was laid down on 1 April 1944 at the Portsmouth (N.H.) Navy Yard; launched on 7 July 1944, sponsored by Mrs.
TENCH stood offshore and watched while they loosed their remaining bombs on installations near Akune: a railroad bridge, a fuel dump, and a factory.
TENCH continued her retirement unaware of the results of her attack - in all probability unsuccessful - but heartened by her escape from what had seemed certain destruction.

Gato class submarines were successful boats that proved to be fast, strong, well armed, and suited to the long-range patrols necessary to fight in the Pacific.
Many of the interiors of the submarine have been cleaned, repainted and refurbished; the concrete deck was broken up and removed and the rusty superstructure has been replaced by historically accurate new construction.

Submarines of the E, H, K, L, M, N, O, and R classes ranged in displacement from 287 to 510 tons, with the fastest boats displaying a top surface speed of barely 14 knots on diesel power.
Submarines played a variety of roles in the war effort, demonstrating the versatility of stealth.

USS Torsk is a fleet-type submarine of the Tench class.
The Tench class were virtual copies of the Gato and Balao classes; however, they were more strongly built than the Gato/Balao classes and had a better internal layout, which increased their displacement by about 35-40 tons.
The Tench class was a late World War II submarine design that represented the continued attempt by the U.S. Navy to improve on the previously successful Gato/Balao classes.

History of the Tang Class Boats
The fleet submarine was obsolete and even though it would exist for another 20 years, it was as useful in the new submarine world as a biplane was at the beginning of World War II.
The class was to be built at a length of 268 feet and a beam of 25 feet.
Thus none of the submarine crews of the force which made patrols during that conflict, some of which were longer and as arduous as World War II patrols were able to earn war patrol pins.

 U.S. Submarines
So frequent was the use of guns and so weak the Japanese response mostly that US submarine skippers were asking for more and heavier guns while their German counterparts, facing high-technology and excellent radar, soon gave up their guns in favor for a smaller silhouette and lighter boat.
Following this class shortly was the first class of "fleet submarines", designed as large vessels with high endurance and speed to support the battlefleet.
The next class, the T-class, was already the prototype for the Gato/Balao class, and these two classes, barely distuinguishable after the refits, would be the primary tools of the US submarine force to destroy the Japanese merchant navy.

While on her initial shakedown cruise on 23 May 1939, the diesel-powered submarine was diverted to search for the sunken submarine, Squalus.
Sighting a red smoke bomb and a buoy from the sunken submarine, she established communications, first by phone and then by signals tapped in Morse code on the hull.
Sculpin, like many of her sister submarines in the early days of the Pacific war, was plagued by malfunctions of torpedo guidance systems which caused the "fish" either to take erratic courses or to run deep.
