Tenchu 2 Review for PlayStation - Gaming Age
The original Tenchu, while only a sleeper hit at best, was still one of the first stealth games out there, and is considered among the best.
Tenchu 2, while labeled as a sequel, is really a prequel as far as the storyline is concerned.
Tenchu 2 features a few new fatality-style assassination maneuvers (slitting throats, breaking necks, etc.), though in general, the result depends on your position in relation to the enemy, and the character you are using.

Tenchu: Fatal Shadows Hands-On - PlayStation 2 News at GameSpot   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In recent years, Activision's Tenchu series has graced both the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox, and while the visuals have obviously improved a great deal since Ayame and Rikimaru's first outing, it's a testament to the quality of the first Tenchu title that the gameplay remains largely unchanged to this day.
The first time you play Tenchu: Fatal Shadows, you'll be encouraged to play through a brief tutorial, which, if you're a fan of the series, will serve as little more than a refresher course, since very little has changed since August 1998.
As in previous Tenchu games, stealth kills are performed by pressing a single button when you manage to get close enough to an enemy who is oblivious to your presence.

Tenchu: Return from Darkness keeps true to its roots and quietly makes its debut on the Xbox, but stealth is what this game is all about.
Tenchu: Return from Darkness is a solid stealth action/combat title that serves up a good blend of traditional ninja gameplay and strategy, but despite many of its obvious improvements over its predecessor the game still feels a bit less that what you’d expect of an Xbox game in both look and feel.
Tenchu: Return from Darkness is built directly from last year’s PS2 title Wrath of Heaven, but despite the developer’s inclusion of many newly created features and improvements, the game does still feel a bit too much like a port.

Tenchu: Return from Darkness - ESCMag Review
Tenchu: Return from Darkness is basically a port of Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven.
One example is that players no longer have to start from the beginning of the mission when his or her character dies, which was a drag in the last installment, working the same level over and over again.
The new levels are more state of the art, the characters are more polished, the motion-captured animations are smoother, and visual effects such as the lighting and weather representation are much cleaner this time around.

Tenchu 3 sports stellar animation for each character and enemy (lots of motion-capture I believe) as well as beautifully constructed environments.
