Rio, 40 Degrees (1954) and Rio, Northern Zone (1957), dos Santos' samba-fuelled first two features, represented important milestones in the development of this new cinema: eschewing the glossy/frothy conventions of the country's commercial cinema for the grittier in-the-streets aesthetics of Italian neorealism, and unprecedented in their sensitive, complex, depiction of Brazil's usually marginalized fl population.
Dos Santos makes wonderfully wicked use of cannibalism as a metaphor for the economic and cultural genocide perpetrated by European colonialists on the Americas.
Dos Santos again broke new ground in his portrayal of fl characters: in contrast to the comic side-kick roles that had made him such a huge star of the chanchadas, Otelo here plays a dignified, intelligent, multi-dimensional fl protagonist -- "a role often denied fls in both North American and Brazilian cinema" (Robert Stam).

Dos Santos has also directed a series of short films and documentaries, has been involved in television, and is considered one of the fathers of the "Cinema Novo" movement in Brazil.
Sadlier also points out how dos Santos was highly influenced by Marxism in his work and how he has portrayed social inequality and racial problems within Brazilian society.
Yet, even though dos Santos's approach to his work was strictly Marxist, Sadlier noted that in his later films he had changed his approach in order to acknowledge the impact of popular culture and of religion in the lives of the poor, especially the Afro-Brazilian religions, such as Umbanda and Candomblé.

The ladeira (the descending or ascending of which would nowadays invite robbery of anybody obviously a tourist) was in Salvador's early years the principal thoroughfare for the transportation of arriving cargo from the lower city to the upper.
Moving back in time, before the Baixa dos Sapateiras was a street it was a stream called Rio das Tripas (Tripe River)...where the unwanted refuge of Salvador's slaughterhouse district (Barroquinha) was tossed (Barroquinha's slaughterhouses are long gone, the area since having become a city bus terminal).
The name was something unneeded by writer Jorge Amado...he took rather the life and personality of his friend and upon these built the character Damião de Souza in his novel Tenda dos Milagres (Tent of Miracles)...a thin disguise in that the twin saints Cosme and Damião are an important part of life in Bahia.

Was it not the point of Nelson Pereira dos Santos' movie Tenda dos Milagres (1975) that many of the prominent European families of Bahia (Cravo Neto's hometown) were cousins of an Afro-Brazilian anthropologist they discriminated?
Cravo Neto does not run away from the African culture of his world; quite the contrary, he immerses himself in it.
He was preceded by the Brazilian filmmakers of the socalled Cinema Novo who in the 1960s and 1970s took up the banner of the African culture of resistance to the ideology of branqueamento (whitening) of Brazilian culture; among them, the two mentioned in this essay, Glauber Rocha and Nelson Pereira dos Santos.
