TENDER IS THE NIGHT - Book
Tender is the Night chronicles the downfall and eventual ruin of Dick Diver, a smart, handsome pshychiatrist.
The novel Tender is the Night by F.Scott Fitzgerald, a tragic romance, is about a young 18 year-old actress named Rosemanry Hoyt, and her realtionship with the Diver's, an American couple.
Tender is the Night is a special gem because of its flaws, because it exemplifies Fitzgerald's desperate life, his cry to use youth for its genuis, it talks frankly enough about all this while at the same time being the sinking ship of technicality and madness and real life that hardly any author can avoid.

I was lucky enough to purchase a copy of this book with a comprehensive introduction, detailing the fact that Tender is the Night is semi-autobiographical, based on Fitzgerald's marriage to schizophrenic Zelda Sayre.
Although I knew that Tender is the Night was semi-autobiographical based on Fitzgerald’s turbulent relationship with his schizophrenic wife Zelda Sayre, perhaps mis-guidedly I was expecting the novel to be approached in his signature style.
Tender Is the Night was my second expedition in to the world of Scott Fitzgerald, I daresay it will prove so for most people.

Something I've noticed about Tender is the Night, which I've never seen anyone else point out, is what seems to be the influence of Hemingway's writing, especially in The Sun Also Rises.
Some of the obvious parallels of course are the lost generation-like ramblings of the American ex-pats around Europe seeking amusement, getting drunk, having affairs and so on, and the role of the woman at the centre (Brett Ashley/Nicole Diver) who remains loved by the male protagonist despite her occasional capriciousness and unintentional cruelty.

Simon & Schuster: Tender Is the Night (Hardcover)
In Tender Is the Night, Fitzgerald deliberately set out to write the most ambitious and far-reaching novel of his career, experimenting radically with narrative conventions of chronology and point of view and drawing on early breakthroughs in psychiatry to enrich his account of the makeup and breakdown of character and culture.
Tender Is the Night is also the most intensely, even painfully, autobiographical of Fitzgerald's novels; it smolders with a dark, bitter vitality because it is so utterly true.
Scott Fitzgerald literally put his soul into Tender Is the Night, and the novel's lack of commercial success upon its initial publication in 1934 shattered him.

 Notes: Tender is the Night
In Tender is the Night, Fitzgerald expands his formula to a third dimension: besides structure and beauty, he adds complexity to the plot.
Tender is the Night also captures just such a mood, "as Golding's cyclonic arms blew them aft without touching them..." (268).
Any of these elements are enough to make Tender is the Night another cherished work from the Fitzgerald portfolio, but it's the added intricacies of the plot which shows Fitzgerald's maturity that benefits from an increasing openness towards experimentation.

A profound study of the romantic concept of character — lyrical, expansive, and hauntingly evocative — Tender Is the Night, Mabel Dodge Luhan remarked, raised F. Scott Fitzgerald to the heights of "a modern Orpheus."
