  MIXED TRAFFIC LOCOMOTIVES
The chief dimensions of this locomotive are: cylinders 18-1/2 in.
In theory, the advantage of the tank over the tender engine for runs of moderate length is that with the former power is not wasted in hauling about a heavy tender with greater supplies of coal and water than the engine normally requires.
But just as in British main line working the tendency is to equip the locomotives with tenders of progressively increasing size—the striking new standard tenders of the L.M.S. with their high curved sides offer a good example of this development—so the tank engine tends to go out of favour for intermediate main line work.

 Spartanburg SC | GoUpstate.com | Spartanburg Herald-Journal
On large locomotives it is usually placed behind the cab but on small ones (especially 0-4-0 tanks) the bunker(s) may be on one side, or both sides, of the firebox.
Most tender locomotives are unable to do this, because the heavy tender is not designed to be pushed and may become unstable at higher speeds.
Tender locomotives generally require turning facilities, such as a turntable or wye, at each end of the run.

 Steam Locomotive Tenders
Tenders for such locomotives were designed with a sloping rear -- reducing the capacity for water, but allowing better visibility to the rear.
This tender is also sometimes referred to as a "pedestal" tender because of the shape of the container -- slightly smaller at the bottom which had "pedestal" for supporting the five rigid axles.
Auxiliary tenders or canteen cars, used to supplement water capacity on road locomotives and were reasonably common during the steam period.

 SNCF 232 U1
This beautiful locomotive, designed under the direction of Marc de Caso, and completed by Corpet-Louvet in 1949, was the result of a reassessment of the performance of 4-6-4 locomotives made after WW II by the Companie de NORD.
Prior to the war, it was planned to built eight streamlined locomotives to haul light weight trains at high speeds.
All European 4-6-4s, tender or tank locomotives, are know as "Baltics." The name "Hudson" is American and came from the New York Central 4-6-4s which in 1927 first serviced the water level route along the Hudson River.

Steam locomotive basics - section 3, tank locomotives
Tank locomotives carry a supply of coal behind the cab in a bunker that often covers a small supplementary water tank.
The water was carried in tanks fitted between the frames of the locomotive, however this form of engine never found favour in Britain but was widely used in Continental Europe usually in conjunction with smaller side tanks.
For example, the Great Western at the time of Grouping in 1923 had 3944 locomotives, 2442 of which were tanks, however US railroads had a few for commuter trains but shunting was entrusted to six- and eight-wheeler tender locomotives.
